General information
Air system description
The systems that require compressed air are supplied by the compressor, which is managed by the
APM (Air Production Modulator) . It is the APM that dries, controls and distribute the air to the
different circuits.
Compressor
The compressor is dimensioned to meet the air requirements of the vehicle. The compressor is
driven by the engine's timing gears. The compressor's function can be divided into two phases -
charging phase and pressure relief phase.
● When the predefined air pressure level is reached, the relief valve opens and the compressor
stops charging (relief phase)

● When the air pressure drops below the predefined air pressure level, the air drier relief valve
closes and the compressor charges again (charging phase).

Air cooling
The compressed air is at high temperature and is therefore fed through a cooling circuit before
reaching the air drier. For optimal desiccant cartridge drying performance and service life of its
integrated components, the temperature of the air supplied to the APM must be limited. The APM
requests cooling from the engine cooling fan to achieve this.

IMPACT 4.07.150 11/19/2022

The APM contains an air drier with a ring filter, which filters oil and carbon particles, and a desiccant
cartridge, which removes moisture from the compressed air by means of absorption. To prevent
freezing and internal corrosion, the air drier ensures that the air that enters the vehicle's pneumatic
system is dry.
Regeneration
Regeneration drains any fluid from the air drier and is done to keep the desiccant cartridge in the
filter dry. This is done by recirculating a certain amount of dried air back from the air tanks at each
compressor cut-off. The APM controls the amount of recirculated air required to keep the filter dry by
monitoring the pumped air volume (charging interval). When air consumption is high, regeneration
sequences can be short, but to compensate for this the number of regeneration cycles are increased.
Priority
The air supply for brake operation and air suspension is always sufficient, but the priority changes
with the pressure:
● Charging has the highest priority at low pressure

● Regeneration has the highest priority when the pressure exceeds a predefined value.

Air system overview

Note
Depending on the application, the air system components differ in design.
The numbers in the illustration refer to the actual ports on the component or interface.

From the engine air filter, cleaned air is feed into the compressor. Some installations can have a
noise resonator (N-r) mounted on the compressor, for noise reduction.
The compressed air is cooled in a pipe (C-p) that is either mounted separately, or is integrated in the
cooling fan ring.
The cooled air is directed to the buffer tank (B-t) and thereafter into the APM port 11. It is the APM
that dries, controls and distribute the air to the different circuits.

The compressor engagement and disengagement is controlled by air from the APM, trough several
interfaces.
From the APM port 27 → via the (Balder--B) manifold → trough the (Engine–F→E) manifold → to the
compressor port 4.
Besides the APM, the air systems have following main interfaces:
● The auxiliary interface (Auxiliary), is mounted near the APM.

● The frame interface (Balder), is mounted outside frame near the compressor.

● The engine interface (Engine), is mounted on frame near the alternator.

● The cab interface (CAB), is mounted on the firewall.

Rear cab suspension

Note
Higher air pressure is required for the rear cab suspension, on a "crew cab" vehicle.
Air is taken from port (25), which supplies air, to both the rear cab suspension and the chassis
suspension.

Foldable foot step

Auxiliary manifold, port (F) and port (G) supplies air to the foot step unfolding mechanism.
The air pressure is reduced in valve (V1) from 8.5 bar to 2.5 bar.
The solenoid valve (V2), controls the toggling between folded and unfolded foot step.
The backflow check valves (V3a, V3b) help stabilizing the function.
