Function description
General
The electronic tachographs are controlled by
electric impulses with frequencies matched to the
road speed of the vehicle. A sensor on the gearbox
registers the speed and transmits impulses to the
tachograph. Any interference in the impulses is
removed ina tachograph and the frequen
processed by the electronics of the instrument
which compensate for the rear axle exchange ratio
and the tyre dimensions of the vehicle. The signal
obtained is then used for input to the speedometer
and odometer. Other signals are also obtainable
from connections on the tachograph and are used
for serving other functions
The impulse sensor obtains its impulses from the
speedometer drive which has eight teeth to provide
a certain number of impulses per revolution of the
gearbox output shaft. Therefore, the frequency
varies with the road speed.
A vehicle can have any one of a number of different
rear axle exchange ratios and tyre dimensions and
therefore the number of impulses per kilometre
varies from one vehicle to another. Therefore, the
tachograph has to be calibrated by adjusting its
exchange ratio constant. In this way the
speedometer drive in the gearbox does not have to
be changed.
The exchange ratio constant of the vehicle is
obtained from a table with the rear axle exchange
ratio and tyre dimensions of a vehicle. Using this
the tachograph is calibrated by setting the
obtained exchange ratio constant on the
tachograph.

8. Measuring of true exchange ratio constant of
vehicle.
Used when rear axle exchange ratio and tyre

Combination instrument
1, Theinstrument panel consists of a number of
smaller panels and instrument units. Each panel
‘or unit is screwed into position from the front
and is easy to loosen and lift out.
2. All gauges are electric. Each gauge consists of a
turning coil unit that reacts to voltages from a
sensor. The instrument includes an electronic
flasher (arrow) that causes warning lights to
flash for insufficient air pressure and oi
pressure.
3. Onthe rear of the combination instrument
there is a flexible printed circuit board for
connecting the various units of the instrument.
Component gauges, circuit board and flasher
are exchangeable. Tighten nuts carefully (0.6

Switches
1, Switches and symbol labels are inserted in
‘openings in the panels. Wires are connected to
switches with connectors.
2. Removal:
= Loosen small panel with switch in it.
— Loosen connector from switch by pressing
together the locking tabs to free them from
the lugs on the switch and separate them.
= Push out switch.

Instrument and symbol illumination
1. Fibre optics are used for illuminating the
symbol labels under the switches. itis possible
for one bulb to illuminate up to sixteen labels
via optic conductors of glass fibres.
The bulb holder is pushed into the light
conductor and is removable for bulb change.
2. Inthe end of a light conductor there is a single
or double light diffuser. The conductor is
pressed into the light diffuser and is held in
position with a clip.
3. Arheostat is used for adjusting light intensity.
The rheostat obtains its own light from switch
51 and therefore its intensity is not adjustable.
