VDS-3 Engine oil for low emission engines

Low-emission engines put great demands on the engine
oil. In order to ensure a long life span with maintained
low emissions and low fuel and oil consumption, it is
necessary to use a higher quality engine oil than that
normally used in older engine generations.

Volvo has developed the earlier VDS and VDS-2 specifi-

cations and modified them for Euro 3 engines. This new
specification is called Volvo Drain Specification-3 (VDS-
3).
VDS-3 contains even more stringent requirements on
piston cleanness and cylinder polishing in comparison
with VDS-2 to ensure engine serviceability and reliability.
VDS-3 also included quality requirements for ACEA E5,
which ensures performance requirements not covered by
the VDS-3 field test. Consequently, VDS-3 does not only
cover field tests of Volvo D12 engines, it also covers the
most stringent engine requirements covered by the
ACEA E5 requirement specification.

VDS-3 additionally covers the same viscosity grades as

VDS-2, i.e. 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30, 10W-40 and 15W-
40.

VDS and VDS-2 oils can of course be used in Euro 3

engines as well but with shorter oil change intervals.

Oil quality
VDS, VDS-2, VDS-3 Using 10W/30 may reduce the fuel consumption in
comparison with the use of 15W/40. However, note

mended.
or ACEA E2, E3, E4, E5

Note that a combination of several of the above-

mentioned qualities may be required in certain cases.

Note: Extra oil additives must not be used. This includes

engine and metal treatment additives in the engine oil.

The bypass filter and full-flow filter should be changed
each time the oil is changed.

Use only Volvo original oil filters.

Service intervals
First oil and filter change with warranty service,
are after 10,000 km or 4 weeks, whichever occurs first.
Exceptions are all vehicles manufactured in Europe.

The alternative service recommendation offers longer

service intervals than the standard service recommenda-
tion. The alternative service recommendation requires
the use of special oil. The restrictions in the table must
be considered, however.

Customers can always select the service recommenda-

tion they prefer after taking into consideration the
relevant restrictions described in the following table.

T1007661
Page 20

Service category Restrictions applicable to using the alternative service recommendation

G In order to use the alternative service recommendation on gearboxes R1000, R/SR1400,
R/SR1700, R/SR1900, SR1700+ Geartronic and SR1900+ Geartronic, certain conditions must
have been fulfilled:

• The gearbox must be fitted with improved oil filter protection. The improved oil filter protection
was introduced in production in August 1996. The oil filter protection can be retrofitted to older
gearboxes.

The replacement oil filter protection is included in spare parts kit 3094780 for gearboxes with-
out retarder and 3094781 for gearboxes with retarder.

• It is not possible to fit the improved oil filter protection on the gearbox if the old type of oil
cooler VXKYL7 (coil cooler) is used with any of the gearboxes R1000, R/SR1400, R/SR1700,
R/SR1900, SR1700+ Geartronic and SR1900+ Geartronic. This means that the alternative
service recommendation cannot be applied.

On the other hand, it is possible to replace the old type VXKYL7 to the new type VXKYL7
(donut). If the new type of VXKYL7 is fitted, the improved oil filter protection can be installed
and the alternative service recommendation can be used.

In addition to the oil cooler, the connection nipple in the spare part kits 3094780 and 3094781
must be replaced with part number 1671995. (The new type of VXKYL7 together with the im-
proved oil filter protection was installed in production on all gearboxes with oil cooler from
August 1996. The new type of VXKYL7 is the same oil cooler as COOL T1.)

For a number of reasons not all rear axles can have the The standard service recommendation and alternative
same service recommendations. They have therefore service recommendation both consist of three parts. The
been divided into different service categories. three parts are oil quality, viscosity and service inter-
vals. They are given in the same order on the following
pages.

The following procedures can be very useful when de-

ciding which oil to use.

1 Find out which service category the component be-

longs to.

2 Use the information in the table under Service in-

tervals and determine the service recommendation
to be used.

3 Use the information under Oil quality and Viscos-

T1006943
ity to determine the oil to be used.
The service categories, a number or a letter, are indi-
cated on the rating plate placed on the rear axle. The
categories are G, 1 and 2.

Note: If the rear axle does not of the service category

on the rating plate, it belongs to service category G.

Two different service recommendations can be applied

to rear axles:

• Standard service recommendation

• Alternative service recommendation

The alternative service recommendation offers longer

service intervals than the standard service recommenda-
tion. The alternative service recommendation requires
the use of special oil. The restriction in the table must be
considered, however.

Customers can always select the service recommenda-

tion they prefer after taking into consideration the
relevant restrictions described in the following table.
