Drivers are advised to avoid The Strood for two hours today due to a high tide. The stretch of road between Mersea Road and East Mersea Road, which connects Mersea Island and Peldon, is expected to be impassable later today.

By about 1.25pm today, the tide is expected to be around 5.30 metres. The road bridges the island to the mainland, leading up through Peldon.

Drivers are strongly advised not to cross during the time that the road floods and to leave extra time for their journey if they are planning on using that route. The tide is expected to rise to nearly five metres before midday, making it dangerous to attempt to cross.

Drivers are still often caught out by the high tides on the road despite constant warnings and signs. For most cars, just 10cm of water can be enough to cause significant damage, and fast-moving tidal water can be even more dangerous.

StroodCam, which logs the tides and issues safety warnings about the use of that stretch of road, advises that the road is avoided unless completely necessary and should be an hour before or after the high tide is expected when the tide reaches 4.9 metres.
