Progress is being made on constructing 122 "affordable" new flats in Wickford, after a 15-year saga to redevelop a patch of land near the town centre. Sanctuary Housing is building its Gateway House project in Runwell Road after about 15 years of various attempts to redevelop the site. A number of developers had tried to regenerate the site, which is seen as the gateway to the town centre.

Sanctuary says the flats will be a collection of "modern" one—and two-bedroom flats available for purchase through shared ownership, which are an "affordable avenue for aspiring homeowners to get on the property ladder". It adds that the flats are "conveniently situated for London commuters who seek a peaceful countryside setting to call home".

A spokesperson for Sanctuary said: “The Gateway House development features a collection of modern, affordable one and two-bedroom apartments that will be available to purchase as a shared ownership option, as well as being available for rent.

“We are pleased to report that work on site is progressing very well and we are looking forward to completing these much-needed contemporary homes in Wickford as part of our wider development programme in Essex.”

Affordable housing covers a range of properties, including council rent, housing association, shared ownership and other types of homes.
