Before Nigel Benn held world titles at both middleweight and super middleweight level in the ring, he spent his formative years at an 'outstanding' Essex school.

Loxford School - formerly Loxford School of Science and Technology - is now an academy in Ilford. The secondary school now has more than 3,000 students aged from 11 to 18 years, and a primary school is connected to it.

Born in Ilford to Barbadian parents, the 61 year old, who retired in 1996, grew up among six brothers, and took up martial arts as a child. The school he attended was last inspected by Ofsted in 2023, when they called it 'outstanding' across the board.

Quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, early years and sixth form provision were all stamped 'outstanding' by inspectors.

Aged 18, Nigel joined the Royal Fusiliers for almost five years, and then joined West Ham Amateur Boxing Club. He became the Amateur Boxing Association Middleweight Champion in 1986.

After his retirement from boxing, Nigel later appearing in the first series of ITV's I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! Nowadays, Nigel's son Connor is the boxer in the family, and Nigel also has a famous cousin in the football world, Paul Ince.

Last year, Nigel took part in a boxing documentary alongside Frank Bruno, Lennox Lewis and Chris Eubank. In the final episode, Nigel revealed he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
