Miguel Vargas went 3-for-4 with an RBI in a loss Wednesday to the Brewers.

All three hits for Vargas were singles. The RBI came in the eighth inning with a knock to drive in Andrew Benintendi. The 25-year-old has enjoyed a quality week, and this is his fourth game in six chances where he’s picked up multiple hits. The fact that his slash is still .219/.305/.305 tells you just how bad Vargas was coming into the week, but it’s still encouraging to see some success from the former top prospect. Just not encouraging enough to suggest he’s worthy of a fantasy addition.
Shane Smith

CWS Relief Pitcher #64

Shane Smith worked five innings while allowing three runs — one earned — and didn’t factor into the decision Wednesday in a start versus the Brewers.

Smith had some defensive troubles behind him, but he also gave up six hits and three walks in one of his more ineffective outings of the year. That’s sort of a backhanded compliment, as five innings of three-run baseball is something most folks would sing up for from a Rule 5 draft pick. His ERA is now a strong 2.23, and the four strikeouts with the aforementioned walks gives him a K/BB of 26/12 heading into his scheduled start against the Royals on Monday.

White Sox optioned RHP Tyler Gilbert to Triple-A Charlotte.

Gilbert is back in the minors after Fraser Ellard was activated off the injured list from his hamstring injury. It seems likely that Gilbert will be the top up-and-down arm for the White Sox while he’s on the roster.

White Sox activated RHP Fraser Ellard off the 15-day injured list.

Ellard ended up missing just over the minimum stint after missing time with a hamstring strain. The 27-year-old should be a mid-to-late inning relief option with the White Sox now that he’s healthy.

CWS Left Fielder #23

Andrew Benintendi went 1-for-3 and swatted a solo home run on Tuesday night as the White Sox fell to the Brewers.

Benintendi got the White Sox on the board in the home half of the first inning with a 366-foot (108.5 mph EV) solo shot that tied the game at 1-1. He also worked a walk in the ballgame. On the season, the 30-year-old outfielder is slashing .222/.291/.431 with five homers and 10 RBI through his first 79 plate appearances.

Luis Robert Jr. blasted a solo homer, drew a walk and stole a base on Tuesday night, but it wasn’t enough to lead the White Sox to victory over the Brewers.

The dynamic 27-year-old outfielder went back-to-back with teammate Andrew Benintendi off of Freddy Peralta in the opening inning, with Robert’s 415-foot (105.7 mph EV) blast giving the White Sox a 2-1 lead. He also drew a walk in the third inning and swiped second base but was left stranded there. He’s hitting a disappointing .158/.283/.305 overall on the season, but that has come with four homers, nine RBI and 11 stolen bases.
Bryse Wilson

CWS Starting Pitcher #46

Bryse Wilson didn’t pitch well as the bulk reliever in a loss against the Brewers on Tuesday night, giving up three runs on two hits in his 3 1/3 innings of work.

Wilson also issued three walks on the evening while recording only one strikeout. He took over in the third inning with the White Sox leading 2-1 and kept the Brewers at bay through his first three frames. He seemed to tire in the sixth though, as he allowed a walk and a couple of singles, one of which plated the tying run. The White Sox then went to the bullpen — and both inherited runners ultimately scored. The 27-year-old hurler got three whiffs on 58 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 21 percent. He now holds a 5.00 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and an 11/9 K/BB ratio over 18 innings on the season.

White Sox sent INF Nick Maton outright to Triple-A Charlotte.

Maton has the ability to elect free agency, but might end up sticking around with Chicago as emergency infield depth. The 28-year-old went unclaimed on waivers after being removed from the White Sox’ 40-man roster over the weekend.

White Sox 1B prospect Tim Elko went 2-for-5 with a walk, two home runs, four RBI, and three runs scored for Triple-A Charlotte on Sunday.

The White Sox’s hulking first base prospect now has nine home runs and 20 RBI on the season while slashing .354/.432/.732 in 23 games at Triple-A. He’s also sporting a 28 percent strikeout rate and has always had strikeout rates around 30 percent in the minors, which likely means he will struggle to hit for a good average at the big league level. That said, the 26-year-old is a career .292 hitter in the minors and probably deserves a shot at some big league at-bats soon.
Braden Montgomery

White Sox promoted OF prospect Braden Montgomery to High-A Winston-Salem.

Montgomery was one of the key pieces coming to Chicago from Boston in the Garrett Crochet trade. He hit 304/.393/.493 with three homers, four doubles, and 19 RBIs in 18 games at Single-A Kannapolis before the White Sox decided to give him some stiffer competition. It would not be a surprise to see him climb to Double-A this season, which would give him an outside shot to debut in Chicago in 2026.
