1. False – A fuse is an example of the electric effect of current.
2. False – A coil of wire is used as an electromagnet.
3. False – Electric current cannot flow through an open circuit.
4. True
5. True
6. False – Fuse is used as a safety device to prevent possible fire in an
electric circuit.
IV. Give one word for the following.
1. Electric circuit 2. Circuit diagram 3. Electric current 4. Battery 5. Fuse
6. Filament.
V. Match the following
1. (f) 2. (a) 3. (e) 4. (b) 5. (d) 6. ©
B. Answer the following questions in brief.
1. Electric current is the flow of electrons(electric charges) through a
conductor(wire).
2. (i) Oven (ii) Geyser (iii) Air conditioner (iv) Refrigerator (v) Room
heater
3. When an electric current is passed through a high resistance wire (like
nichrome), the wire becomes hot and produces heat. This is called the
heating effect of current.
4. (i) Electric toaster (ii) Electric iron (iii) Hair dryer (iv) Hot plate (v)
Electric oven
5. A good fuse wire is made of tin as it has a low melting point.
6. The filament becomes hot because the thin wire offers resistance to
the current. As the electrons are forced through this thin wire, they heat it
up.
7. 5A.
8. An electromagnet consists of a coil of wire wound on a soft iron core.
9. (i) Electromagnets are used on cranes in steel-works and scrap yards.
(ii) Used in electric bells, loudspeakers etc.
(iii) Some modern trams and trains use electromagnets.
10. The strength of the magnetic field can be increased by:
(i) Increasing the amount of passing current.
(ii) increasing the turns of wire on the coil.
(iii) using a ‘soft’ iron core.
11. No. This is because electromagnets can only attract magnetic
materials. Plastic bag is a non magnetic material and will not be
attracted by an electromagnet.
12. When the current is switched off in an electromagnet it loses its
magnetism.
13. By using a compass.
14. A fuse is a safety device which prevents damage to an electric
circuit.
15. CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Lamps)are now being used in place of
electric bulbs because they consume less electricity and are energy
savers.
16. MCB stands for miniature circuit breakers. These are switches which
automatically turn off when current in a circuit exceeds the safe limit.
17. Low melting point
18. Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB)
19. Same as Ans 15.
20. An electric fuse is required in all electrical appliances to check the
excessive flow of electric current.
C. Distinguish between the following.
1. Cell and Battery
Cell Battery
1.A cell is a singular unit that A battery is composed of many
produces electric current. cells.
2.The symbol is . The symbol of a cell is .
2. An Open Switch and A Closed Switch
An Open Switch A Closed Switch
1.An open switch does not allow A closed switch allows current to
current to pass through the circuit. pass through the circuit.
2. The bulb does not glow when The bulb glows when the switch is
the switch is open. closed.
3.It is represented as . It is represented as .
D. Long Answer Questions
1.• Connect the dry cell, the bulb and the copper wire as shown below.
• Leave a gap in this connection and mark it as AB.
• Due to gap AB the electric circuit is not complete and therefore the
bulb does not glow.
• Take a pencil sharpened at both ends and fit it in gap AB. We will find
that the bulb glows now.
. For an electric current to flow there must be a complete circuit without
no gaps.
2. *Connect the metallic wire to a dry cell with a switch using connecting
wires having crocodile clips.
* Place the compass needle on the metallic wire.
*Now close the switch and observe the deflection of the compass
needle, if any.
*Open the switch and again observe the needle of the compass whether
it deflects again to come back to its initial position or not.
*The deflection of the needle shows that the current carrying conductor
acts as a magnet.
3. • Wind the wire tightly around the nail so that you have at least 25
turns. Keep the turns close together
and always wind in the same direction. Try not to overlap the wires.
• Remove the insulation from the ends of the wire and attach one end of
the wire to one end of the battery and the other end of the wire to the
other end of the battery through a switch.
• Close the circuit by closing the switch.
• The electromagnet is ready.
4. *Take a thin strand of steel wood between the two nails.
*Connect the nails to the two term als of a four cell battery through -mals
*Our fuse is ready.
*As we press the switch and complete the circuit, we will find that the
strand will burn out and the circuit will break.
5. • When the bell is pressed, the contact screw touches the iron strip
and the circuit is completed.
• The current starts flowing through the coil.
• The electromagnet becomes magnetised and the soft iron armature is
attracted towards the electromagnet. The movement of the iron causes
the hammer to hit the gong.
• This movement breaks the circuit at point P, so that the current stops
flowing and switches off the
electromagnet.
• The spring pulls the armature back to its original position, the circuit is
remade and the process starts
over again. This is how the bell rings.
E. Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)
1. No. The towel when
wrapped over the bulb may be burned by the heat created by the bulb
and she wasted a lot of energy.
2. A geyser needs a high rate of electricity. So, 15A fuse should be
used.Television needs a low rate of electricity. So, a 5A fuse should be
used.
3. Paheli’s electromagnet is a more powerful electromagnet due to the
extra number of turns, and will attract more pins.
4. Refer to Ans. 5 (Long Answer Questions)
