Human Chorionic Gonadotropin

HCG is a hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy that is detected by pregnancy tests. Abnormally high levels of HCG can indicate certain cancers as some tumor cells also produce the hormone. HCG is a glycoprotein composed of two subunits, alpha and beta, with the beta subunit encoded by six homologous genes on chromosome 19. Blood or urine tests can measure HCG levels to diagnose pregnancy or detect cancers and other conditions associated with abnormal HCG production.
