Facepiece: Made of silicone rubber, it fits closely
against your face to form a seal

Inlet Valve Body & Inlet Valve Disk
Allows the filtered air to enter the mask and prevents moist exhaled air from entering the filter canister

Nosecup Valve Disks: Allows filtered air to
enter the nose cup and prevents moist exhaled air from fogging the eye lenses in cold weather

exit the mask while preventing unfiltered air from entering the mask

FILTER CANISTER REPLACEMENT CRITERIA
Peacetime Replacement
One year for all filters or if any of the following: Physical damage(crushed, cut, inch deep dents) Immersed in water Excessive resistance Directed by higher headquarters When listed unserviceable SB 3-30-2

SANITIZING THE M40
Step #1: Remove
Head harness Airflow deflector Nosecup valve disks Outlet valve cover/disk Internal drink tube
Step #2: Sanitizing solution
Add a level teaspoon of calcium hypochlorite to each gallon of water in a utility pail. Mix for 30 seconds
Step #3: Set up canteen
Remove cap and fill canteen with solution
from pail, secure cap Attach canteen to mask Invert canteen/squeeze canteen to force solution Run all of the solution through drinking system and rinse drinking system twice with clear water the same way

SANITIZING THE M40
Step #4: Immerse facepiece, outserts, airflow
deflector, outlet valve cover and QDH sanitizing solution and agitate for 5 minutes

Left/Right Canister Conversion
Remove canister Disconnect buttons on airflow deflector Pull airflow deflector from inside mask and push deflector post to remove deflector Remove side voicemitter retaining ring, gasket, and voicemitter Leave valve body on deflector Replace deflector in opposite side port From inside of mask work valve body through port until in proper position(works as a gasket) Push deflector buttons into place Install canister Install gasket, voicemitter, and retaining ring. Hand tighten with D-ring

Conducted to alleviate m Marines encapsulation. Conducted after all methods of detection have failed to indicate agent Two procedures used

Unmasking With M256 Kit
15 min needed Kit used at various points If kit is clear, senior marine has two unarmed marines sit in shade Two Marines unmask for 5 min Observed for 10 min Remainder of unit unmasks if no symptoms were shown Continue to observe first two Marines Approximately 30 min Check liquid contamination with m8 paper Senior marine directs two unarmed marines to move to shady area Marines hold breath, keep eyes open and break mask seal for 15 sec

Observe marines for 10 min If no symptoms appear, Marines unmask for 5 min Observe Marines for 10 min If no symptoms, remainder unmask Continue observation Have first-aid treatment available for both procedures Notify higher headquarters after completed If either unmasking procedure indicates agent present, senior Marine needs to:
Move to a new area and retest Continue mission and retest in one hour Use collective protection if available
