SECTION I (50 Marks)
Answer all the questions in this section in the spaces provided.
1. Paint manufacturing company mixes green paint with red paint in the ratio 3:2 to make a brown paint. 10
litres of green paint costs Kshs.1 200 and 10 litres of red paint costs Kshs.1 800. The company sells the
brown paint at a profit of 20% after allowing the customer a discount of 10% on the marked price.
Calculate the marked price per kilogram. (4 marks)

8. A triangle ABC is such that AB = 8 cm, BC = 5.3 cm and angle ABC = 52.5 . Using a ruler and a pair of
compasses only, construct the triangle ABC hence shade the region inside the triangle that is at least 4 cm

13. The top of a table is a regular octagon of sides measuring 25.0 cm each. Find the percentage error in
calculating the perimeter of the table. (3 marks)
14. A trader bought a van at Ksh 6 000 000 in January 2018. The value of the car depreciated by 2% every 4
months. Determine, correct to the nearest Ksh 100, the value of the car in December 2020. (3 marks)
15. A hanging lamp is supported by three chains of equal length, fixed to points A, B, C in the ceiling which
form an equilateral triangle of side 16 cm, and the lower ends are connected at a point 20 cm below the
ceiling. Calculate:
(a) The length of each chain (1 mark)
(b) The angle which each chain makes with the ceiling. (2 marks)

16. In an experiment involving two variables, time (t) hours and the height (h) cm, the following results were
obtained

Answer any five questions from this section in the spaces provided.
17. The table below shows Income tax rates for a certain year

In July of that year, an employee whose total taxable allowances is Kshs.15 220 paid a net tax of
Kshs.4550.
He was also entitled to the following tax reliefs:
Monthly personal relief Ksh.1280
Monthly Insurance relief at the rate of 15% of the premium paid.
(a) Given that he pays monthly premium of Kshs.3000, calculate the employee’s monthly
(i) gross tax; (2 marks)
(ii) taxable income. (5 marks)
(b) The employee also pays 2.75% of his basic salary towards SHIF and Ksh.360 towards NSSF.
Calculate his net salary. (3 marks)

18. A rectangle ABCD has vertices A 2, 0 , B 4, 0 , C 4, 4 and D 2, 4 . On the grid provided;
(a) (i) Draw rectangle ABCD, its image ABCD of under a stretch transformation with the line
x 2 as the invariant and point B 4, 0 is mapped onto point B 6, 0 . (3 marks)
(ii) Draw the image ABCD of ABCD under an enlargement, scale factor of – 2, centre
origin. (2 marks)
(iii) ABCD is the image of ABCD under the reflection in the line y 0. Draw the
image ABCD and states its coordinates. (2 marks)
(b) Determine a single transformation matrix that would map ABCD onto ABCD. (3 marks)

19. A certain sequence of numbers is formed by adding corresponding values of an AP and GP. The common
ration of the GP is 3 and the first three terms of the sequence are 12, 26 and 64. If a is the first term of the
AP with a common difference of d and x is the first term of GP, find;
(a) the first term of the AP and GP; (4 marks)
(b) The common difference of the AP (1 mark)
(c) Calculate the ninth term of the sequence (2 marks)
(d) The sum of the first 10 terms of the sequence. (3 marks)

21. In a carton there are 8 red pens, 5 blue pens and 2 green pens. Two pens are picked at random from the
carton without replacement.
(a) Draw a probability tree diagram to represent the information. (2 marks)
(b) Using the tree diagram, find the probability that,
(i) The first pen picked is red (1 mark)
(ii) The first pen picked is blue or green (2 marks)
(iii) The two pens picked are both blue (2 marks)
(iv) At least one of the two pens picked is green (3 marks)

22. Two towns P and Q both lie on the same latitude in the Northern hemisphere. P lies 53ºW while Q lies in
the 127ºE meridian.
a) Given that the distance between P and Q is 5400nm along a circle of latitude, find the latitude of
the two towns and hence the position of town Q. (4 marks)
b) Another town R lies 45º North of the Equator and on the same longitude as town Q. Find the

shortest distance between P and R to the nearest km.( = , Radius of the Earth R=6370)

c) A ship sails due West from town Q on Sunday at 8.30am towards P. The speed of the ship is 30

(a) Giving reasons, find the size of angle;

(b) Given that, AB = 6 cm, find the area of the cirle. (4 marks)

24. A draper is required to supply two types of shirts: type A and type B. The total number of shirts must not
be more than 400. He has to supply more of type A than of type B. However the number of type A shirts
must not be more than 300 and the number of type B shirts must not be less than 80.
Let x be the number of type A shirts and y the number of type B shirts
(a) Write down in terms of x and y all the linear inequalities representing the information above.
(4 marks)
(b) On the grid provided, draw the inequalities and shade the unwanted regions. (4 marks)
(c) The draper makes a profit of Ksh.180 on shirts of type A and Kshs.150 on type B t-shirts. Find the
number of items he should buy give maximum profit. (3 marks)
