Los Angeles Film and TV Shoot Days Plunge

Filming levels in Los Angeles are slipping amid a global production crunch and escalating competition from other regions to host movies and TV shows. The three-month period from January to March saw losses in every category of production compared to the same period last year, according to a report from FilmLA issued on April 14. Shooting in L.A. decreased over 22 percent to 5,295 shoot days over that span.

Streaming Services’ Subscriber Growth

It has taken a few years, but more legacy Hollywood studios’ streaming businesses have started turning annual profits, with the rest touting progress toward that goal. Netflix, crowned on Wall Street as the undisputed king of streaming, grew its subscribers, revenue and profit in 2024. Meanwhile, among studios Warner Bros. Discovery last year managed a profit for the business that includes, among others, its streaming operations, while Disney swung to its first-ever full calendar-year streaming profit.

Tracker Tops Broadcast

After debuting as the No. 1 network series (excluding sports) last season, Tracker is set to repeat at the top in 2024-25. The CBS drama starring Justin Hartley is averaging 17.5 million viewers per episode in Nielsen’s all-platform, 35-day ratings (as of mid-March, the most recent available figures), 1.4 million more than the second-place network shows (Matlock and High Potential). Only streaming giants Squid Game, Adolescence and Reacher average more viewers this season. Tracker also leads the linear rankings on broadcast TV and is the only non-sports network show to top 10 million viewers without streaming.
