When did specific become an ocean?

I have been listening to the cricket phone in on 5 Live and some chap has phoned in arguing that the 50 over ODI team needs"pacific" players with "pacific" abilities.

Dear god where has it all gone wrong.

And if anyone tells me this is "my bad" they can go elsewhere!

Another ELO Best Of troubles the charts

I think ELO were marvelllous in their day and I still play them on the iPod when I get nostalgic.

What I am intrigued by is who is buying the latest best of compilation?

It is currently number 23 in the album chart according to chartstats.com

Hopefully "young people" are discovering the joy of ELO.

Let There Be Pop

Following on from the Rock is Dead and Rockist Articles threads there is a need for someone to emulate AC/DCs classic Let There Be Rock and create a Let There Be Pop alternative.

I have no musical ability whatsoever but I would suggest it stole from these singles/albums in a non-obvious/copyright infringing way:

M - Pop Music

Anything from Dare by The Human League

Anything from Parallel ;Lines by Blondie

Anything from the debut album by The Feeling

Any takers?

Rock Is dead - when did it die?

Rock music has arrived at a state of perpetual reinvention

Where do we go from here?

The Feeling

I am just listening to their new album.

I think their debut album is fantastic and the second one was OK.

Truly disappointing third effort.

Kool and the Gang

Headlining one of the stages tonight at Glastonbury.

Now there is a perfect way to end the weekend.

Straight Ahead is the best disco song ever written.

U2

In the early 1980s they produced some great albums, Unforgettable Fire being my favourite.

Post Live Aid they became a bit egocentric but if you release The Joshua Tree that is allowed.

Rattle and Hum was a reasonable album with some good tunes but the ego had taken over.

Achtung Baby in 1991 was a nail on classic.

Then it went bad and has only occasionally peaked since then.

BUT

I still like U2 and am looking forward to their set tonight at Glastonbury.

i may be a lone voice...

Inflated Job Titles

The FPO received a letter today from her hairdressers to say that her regular stylist was leaving the business and offering her alternative hairdressers.

Except they weren't hairdressers, they were "Design Directors".

At what point does an experienced hairdresser become a "Design Director"?

I know creative types like to use ambiguous titles but this must be a new low.

Any thoughts?

P.S. I am just a Pharmacist

The fickle world that is rock and roll

Sometimes great musicians never quite make it...

Ian McNabb is IMHO the best songwriter of the last 30 years to have not been embraced by the song buying public.

Here is his first effort post Icicle Wotks:

Twitter. How does it work and why should I bother?

I know nothing about Twitter.

I have created an account, and following an earlier blog post I have a few members of The Massive as followers.

I have never tweeted but have set up links to Twitter on my iPhone and iPad.

What do i need to do next and how can I separate any professional related tweets from those linked to The Word.

Do I need two identities?

Is the Duke of Endiburgh an obvious member of The Massive?

In the BBC documentary on now he seems a reasonable bloke.

David Hepworth vs Mark Ellen

David wins because he wears shirts that are not always blue.

And he does a great visual impression of the Gran in the Giles cartoons.

The Carpenters

I have just watched a BBC4 documentary that reminded me how great they were.

I have an early 1990s compilation somewhere called We Love The Carpenters of grunge bands et al doing covers of their songs which I will now go off and try and find.

Anyone recall it?

But for now enjoy this:

Queen Documentary

BBC2 are screening two 1 hour documentaries on Queen over the forthcoming weekend - 29th/30th May at 10pm. The second one will be followed by the excellent live concert from Hammersmith Odeon in 1975.

Apparently it includes video of their first ever TV appearance which was believed to have been wiped.

I know they get a mixed reaction here but if you like them then fill your boots!

Classic Metal v NWOBHM

Smoke On The Water vs Long Arm Of The Law as an example.

Two songs describing events experienced by both bands.

No Wizards and no hard loving women needed.

Which era wins?
