Hi, How can I create an article? My grandfather was a prominent artist, painter in USSR. He was mostly active in 1950-1970. I haven't noticed anything about him and his work on Wikipedia. I would like to create an article about my grandfather. I have photos of him, his works and some documents. And, I have few links to webpages that mentioned him and his art. What's the procedure?
Thank you! --LevTi (talk) 09:03, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- @LevTi: Hello! To create such an article, I would advise starting a draft. There you can practice and work on writing without worrying about the work coming out fully formed and presentable. Other authors have more eloquently described the procedure on the following page: Wikipedia:Your first article.
- I'm happy to help you along with this, and it's possible that an article exists on other language Wikipedias. Reconrabbit 15:00, 7 March 2025 (UTC)
- Hi,
- Please review this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Gregory_Pavlovich_Shpolyansky
- I would like to create this article in Russian too. And, this article is about my grandfather. You comments and suggestions are appreciated. LevTi (talk) 21:24, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
- Also, how can I add photos? LevTi (talk) 22:56, 8 March 2025 (UTC)
- I have done some work to make the article resemble others in Wikipedia. If you want to refer to documents that are not online, that is also acceptable. I am concerned that just these three websites is not enough to establish the subject is a notable painter. Even if he was prominent, just this is not enough.
- For photos, if you were the original photographer, you can upload these photos to Wikimedia Commons where they can be used on any language Wikipedia. However, if someone else took the photos, then you would need their permission, or otherwise be able to use them under copyright law. This is complicated and you would likely need someone else to assist you here.
- If you would like to create the article in Russian, the Russian Wikipedia is here: ru:Заглавная_страница Reconrabbit 02:03, 9 March 2025 (UTC)
- Also, how can I add photos? LevTi (talk) 22:56, 8 March 2025 (UTC)

Hi Reconrabbit, I've partially undone your changes to the Abstracting and indexing section with this edit due to this being the style primarily used for journal articles. Nobody (talk) 08:00, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
- Is that so? I was trying to duplicate the style Randykitty used on some articles I worked on (Chemistry Teacher International, Marine Ornithology). Reconrabbit 13:32, 11 March 2025 (UTC)
- I consider it a weak form of Citation overkill. Randykitty Thoughts? Nobody (talk) 13:40, 11 March 2025 (UTC)

- I personally prefer MIAR/{{cite MIAR}} because it's a one-stop-shop that summarizes all the databases in one swoop. The only ones I like to cite separately are JCR/Scopus for the impact factor/ranking and citescore/ranking. Citing everything individually also works, it's just extremely tedious and I personally don't see what it adds over MIAR. Headbomb {t · c · p · b} 11:54, 12 March 2025 (UTC)

Question from ManHattan42 (18:13, 1 April 2025)
[edit]Hello!
I hope all is well with you. I joined Wikipedia because I am looking to get an article created. The individual in question has made a large impact in the field of medicine.
Thank you. --ManHattan42 (talk) 18:13, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- @ManHattan42, I can try and help you here. What is your relationship with this individual? Professional, personal interest, paid, or anything else? Knowing this will help you proceed in accordance with Wikipedia's guidelines. Help:Your first article will provide some basic information. Reconrabbit 18:28, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- My relationship is personal, but his prevalence is objective. I would be happy to share more information as I think a third party would verify my confidence in his need for a Wikipedia page.
- Thank You. ManHattan42 (talk) 18:39, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- A name would be of help, as well as documentation of his accomplishments that would warrant this need for a Wikipedia page. Reconrabbit 18:55, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- His name is Dr. Michael T. Longaker.
- Here is a link to his page at Stanford University: https://profiles.stanford.edu/michael-longaker
- Dr. Longaker was a member of the 1979 Michigan State basketball team that won a national title. His teammate Magic Johnson faced off against Larry Bird in what is commonly discussed as the game that changed college basketball and created the 'Madness' in March Madness. There are multiple books written about the rivalry between Magic and Bird such as 'When March Went Mad' by Seth Davis. Here is a link to a Stanford article describing this: https://scopeblog.stanford.edu/2019/03/20/from-march-madness-to-medicine-with-help-from-mentors/
- Dr. Longaker went on to be valedictorian of his class at Harvard Medical School and then did his residency at NYU and UCSF -- he is board certified as a General Surgeon and Plastic Surgeon. This can be seen in his bio in the Stanford link.
- Dr. Longaker also obtained an MBA from the now defunct joint executive program at Cal & Columbia University where he was also valedictorian.
- Dr. Longaker made the discovery in the 1990s that you heal without a scar in your first two trimesters of life: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0022346805801654. This launched his career in wound healing. He would then go on to become the director of the Stem Cell Institute at Stanford University and publish more than 1300 papers -- an incredibly high number in the world of medicine. Dr. Longaker now runs the Longaker lab at Stanford, one of the most accomplished labs in the country. He has also started private ventures such as Arresto Biosciences (acquired by Gilead for $225MM). Here is a link to his profile at TauTona group, another private venture, that discusses his co-founder status of Arresto: https://tautonagroup.com/team/michael-longaker/.
- There is numerous public information about Dr. Longaker as he has won countless awards. I think you will agree that a Wikipedia page is very fitting.
- Thank you. ManHattan42 (talk) 19:57, 1 April 2025 (UTC)
- You've convinced me. A very rough draft has been put together here: Draft:Michael Longaker but I haven't got much time to keep working on it. Signature contrast
[edit]Hello! I love your signature, but.. I think it doesn't meet the minimum contrast requirements (see this contrast tool). Would you be willing to make the green a bit darker for those whose eyes are not as good? Thanks! —Femke 🐦 (talk) 07:55, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
- If I were to do so, it would fail contrast requirements on dark mode. Should I make a setting for this situation or just use a dark background? I feel like the styling already takes up enough space with the dark mode switch on the rabbit part (though it hasn't hit the max yet). Reconrabbit 15:17, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
- I can't easily find what colour the background is in dark mode. Do you know? If it's #101010 (as ChatGPT claims while giving false sourcing), there is some wiggle room, and a colour like #558A24 might get closer to being accessible in both? —Femke 🐦 (talk) 15:54, 13 April 2025 (UTC)
- I messed around with the exact shades and found one that satisfies the contrast ratios. For the record, I turned on dark mode and used an eyedropper tool on the background in GIMP, which told me that it was #000000. (Also noticed that it doesn't really contrast as well with black text, so I added two dashes) -- Reconrabbit 13:50, 14 April 2025 (UTC)

- If you're nominating for DYK, feel free to ping me to review, to avoid duplicate work on assessing the article :). The fact about the different pellets is quite fun I think. —Femke 🐦 (talk) 07:07, 19 April 2025 (UTC)
- I will be nominating it for DYK, or at least trying to. I won't go into cecotrophy here - that's a feature of every lagomorph, and swamp rabbits have their unique quirks. -- Reconrabbit 00:54, 20 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Femke, I've created the nomination at Template:Did you know nominations/Swamp rabbit, but with a new source that put some information in more straightforward terms than the 2018 work. -- Reconrabbit 14:34, 20 April 2025 (UTC)

Question from ArlenesPiratetreasures (10:23, 20 April 2025)

Question from JvnkoLovedYou (02:37, 23 April 2025)
[edit]Hello! When looking for edits to make, do you generally stick within your interests and knowledgeable areas? Or do you instead just do what is recommended to you at the time? --JvnkoLovedYou (talk) 02:37, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hi! When I started editing, I used the suggestions on my homepage. Now that I have a better idea of what the different projects are, I focus on improving specific articles. For example, right now I am writing new articles that are missing on the list of herbicides and improving the article volcano rabbit. If you are interested in some topics, like video games or composers, you can go to the WikiProject Video Games or WikiProject Composers to learn more. -- Reconrabbit 13:52, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
DYK for Manchurian hare
[edit]On 24 April 2025, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Manchurian hare, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Manchurian hare (pictured), unusually among hare species, is a forest dweller? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Manchurian hare. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Manchurian hare), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Teahouse answer on contentious topics
[edit]Thanks for your contributions at the WP:Teahouse helping newer users out, but please do not answer Teahouse questions if you do not understand what is involved. I noticed a recent answer regarding contentions topics that was not helpful. In particular, advising a user to go ahead and save their contentious topics warning on another user's Talk page despite getting an edit filter alert trapping their first save attempt is poor advice. The filter is there for a reason, and action is required before proceeding. A user that saves the edit anyway without carrying out required actions detailed in the alert could be accused of disruptive editing. Repeated invalid placement of contentious topic warnings on other users' pages could even get them blocked. So please don't tell a user to just read the edit filter and then go ahead and publish, as it could get them into hot water. Thanks again for your volunteer work at the Teahouse. Mathglot (talk) 18:32, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you for clarifying, I will refrain from making any comments on edit filters in the future. I searched trying to find the trigger for that edit filter and what it does and could not find the reason for it beyond adding contentious topic warnings. -- Reconrabbit 18:40, 24 April 2025 (UTC)
Question from PioneerBank (16:58, 25 April 2025)
[edit]I created a page for Pioneer Bank in the sandbox. I would like to make it live, please let me know how I can accomplish that. --PioneerBank (talk) 16:58, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hello PioneerBank,
- Since it seems to be the case that you have a conflict of interest in regards to the subject of this page, I have added an "articles for creation" template to the top of the page so that you might have it reviewed by another editor before publication. It is unlikely to be accepted in this state, though, as many if not all of the references used are not independent of the subject, and much of the information about branch locations and operating hours are considered to be out of the scope of Wikipedia and will likely be deleted or ignored. I advise reviewing our guidelines on what makes a reliable source and find information from said reliable sources that discuss Pioneer Bank.
- Also, you will have to change your username, since it implies that you are not editing as one person, but on behalf of the entire bank. -- Reconrabbit 17:15, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Graphmaster: Notifying you here with the new username. I'd be happy to help you out with the article but have quite a few other projects going on as well. -- Reconrabbit 20:36, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
- OK. I just wanted to list the bank on Wikipedia as there are other listings of businesses, including banks. I am fine with another editor reviewing/changing any of the information. I do have a question though, how do listings get made typically? Don't most people post the information themselves and therefore most pages have a conflict of interest? I do sincerely appreciate your assistance. Graphmaster (talk) 21:21, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
- Articles get made by people who find it interesting to do so. There are specific procedures that people who are paid to write have to follow, but that does result in published articles as well. (WP:PAID) For example, Tompkins Financial Corporation is an institution that I am familiar with, but the original author probably just wrote it because it was based in Ithaca, New York and they lived in the same place. -- Reconrabbit 21:52, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
Question from TheEditShade (17:24, 28 April 2025)
[edit]Hi - How do I move a page to live after being in the sandbox? Thanks --TheEditShade (talk) 17:24, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
- @TheEditShade hello, only users that are confirmed can move pages to "main-space" where they are readily accessible to the public. "Confirmed" means you have made 10 published edits and have been a user for more than 4 days. You could submit your sandbox for review - I added a notice at the top with a button to submit it to Articles for Creation, which is probably the best path for you to take here. -- Reconrabbit 17:31, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you TheEditShade (talk) 17:41, 28 April 2025 (UTC)
- This has now been submitted for review. Thanks TheEditShade (talk) 17:56, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

WikiCup 2025 May newsletter
[edit]The second round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 April at 23:59 UTC. To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.
Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:
BeanieFan11 (submissions) with 1,233 round points from 24 good articles, 28 Did you know articles, and one In the news nomination, mainly about athletes and politicians
Thebiguglyalien (submissions) with 1,127 round points, almost entirely from two high-multiplier featured articles on Black Widow (Natasha Romanova) and Grace Coolidge, in addition to two GAs and two reviews
History6042 (submissions) with 1,088 round points from four featured lists about Michelin-starred restaurants, nine good articles and a good topic mostly on Olympic-related subjects, seven ITN articles, and dozens of reviews
Gog the Mild (submissions) with 1,085 round points from three FAs, one GA, and four DYKs on military history, as well as 18 reviews
Arconning (submissions) with 887 round points, mostly from four FLs, six GAs, and seven DYKs on Olympic topics, along with more than two dozen reviews
In addition, we would like to recognize Generalissima (submissions) for her efforts; she scored 801 round points but withdrew before the end of the round.
The full scores for round 2 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 13 featured articles, 20 featured lists, 4 featured-topic articles, 138 good articles, 7 good-topic articles, and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 19 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 300 reviews.
Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed in Round 3. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
