On November 3, 2009, members in two of the country's 99 state legislative chambers were up for election. Two states, New Jersey and Virginia, held state legislative elections.
Only the lower chambers held elections, meaning 180 seats were up for election. In 2009, there were 7,384 state legislative seats, with 1,971 seats belonging to state senates and 5,413 seats belonging to state houses.
New Jersey
Elections were held in all 80 of New Jersey's General Assembly districts.
There were no state Senate seats up for election.
Virginia
Elections were held in all 100 of Virginia's state House districts.
There were no state Senate seats up for election.
