Maine Road has reached the end of the road Maine Road memories in photos

Countless games have lit up Maine Road over the past 80 years.

But there are some that linger longer in the memory for Manchester City fans than others, and not always for the right reasons.

Be it win, lose or draw - incident and drama have been almost ever present in M14 since 1923.

Derby games, particularly those that end in triumph, will always hold a special place in Blue hearts, but we we look at other Maine Road memories.

Manchester City 4-1 Sheffield Wednesday
Division One - 24 April 1937

The First Division title comes to Maine Road for the first time thanks to a stylish seventh successive win on home territory.

Two goals in five minutes from Eric Brook and Fred Tilson put City in charge and victory was sealed when Peter Doherty added the third.

Wednesday replied in the second half but Brook had the last word with his second of the game - and City were champions.

Manchester City 5-1 Charlton Athletic
Division Two - 11 May 1985

City get the win, and the goals, they need to pip Portsmouth to a promotion spot on the final day of the season.

A huge crowd of 47,285 packed into Maine Road on a glorious spring day knowing Billy McNeill's men were level on points with Pompey before kick-off - but were five goals better off on goal difference.

Early strikes from Andy May and David Phillips put City in control and further goals from Phillips again, Paul Simpson and Jim Melrose meant they were up for sure as Portsmouth could only win 2-0 at Huddersfield.

Stewart scored one of a trio of hat-tricks

Manchester City 10-1 Huddersfield
Division Two - 7 November 1987

Three City players grab hat-tricks as Mel Machin's side smash 10 past the bottom-of-the-table Terriers despite Huddersfield dominating the early stages.

Neil McNab opened the scoring before Paul Stewart, Tony Adcock and David White all notched trebles, while former Blue Andy May added a consolation for Huddersfield. A great day all round.

Manchester City 0-1 Luton Town
Division One - May 14 1983

The sight of David Pleat's jig of joy across the pitch still chokes any Blues fan.

City only needed a draw while Luton needed to win to stay up and, after taking the initiative from the off, Raddy Antic's deflected shot beat Alex Williams with seven minutes left to give the Hatters the crucial goal.

City were relegated after 17 years in the top flight.

Manchester City 2-2 Liverpool
Premiership - 5 May 1996

Battling against relegation the Blues conceded two own-goals before clawing level through Uwe Rosler and Kit Symons.

Alan Ball knew his side needed to do better than Southampton and Coventry to survive - so when he got word that Coventry were losing he instructed City to play out time.

Steve Lomas was playing keep ball near the corner flag when the recently substituted Niall Quinn ran out of the tunnel to tell his team-mates otherwise.

But it was too late to find a winner - and City were down, again.

Manchester City 2-2 QPR
Division One - 25 April 1998

Another relegation, and the same old story of City shooting themselves in the foot, this time in the penultimate game of the season.

Georgiou Kinkladze fired the Blues in front in the first minute, but Rangers levelled through Mike Sheron.

Jamie Pollock then nodded a horrendous own goal and although Lee Bradbury managed an equaliser the two points dropped meant City no longer had their fate in their own hands.

Typically, they thumped Stoke 5-2 on the final day, but results elsewhere meant they were in Division Two for the first time in their history.
