Paul Ince earned his first win as Notts County boss as the Magpies defeated Gateshead to reach the second round of the FA Cup.
Notts had the better first-half with Ince's son Thomas twice going close.
Their efforts paid off when Ben Davies put them ahead from the penalty spot after James Curtis fouled Lee Hughes.
The visitors improved after the break and had a number of chances to level but Luke Rogers sealed Notts the win when he put away Hughes' cross.
Notts County manager Paul Ince told BBC Radio Nottingham: "This was always going to be their (Gateshead's) cup final and the onus was on us from the first whistle.
"It could have been four or five, but once the second goal went in there was a sigh of relief.
"I have not been here long enough to assess all my players, but I do know the defence, as a unit, were fantastic."
