MK Dons surrendered their 100% home record as they were held by fellow League One high fliers Rochdale.
The visitors took the lead on 20 minutes when Jason Kennedy finished smartly after dreadful defending by MK Dons' Angelo Balanta.
The Dons hit back eight minutes later through an excellent header by Mathias Doumbe from a Peter Leven corner.
But Lewis Guy and Jermaine Easter were unable to make the most of chances as the Dons chased a second-half winner.
MK Dons manager Karl Robinson told BBC Three Counties Radio: "I thought we totally dominated a game of football and will rue what I would class are two or three guilt-edged chances.
"The league doesn't lie and they (Rochdale) are up there for a reason. But at times we made them look distinctly average today. Some of our football was excellent.
"The shirt means a lot to the players. That hurt me today, it hurt the players as well. The fans and the players need to stick together. There is a long road ahead."
Rochdale manager Keith Hill told BBC Radio Manchester: "You do get a bit greedy, you come into these games and when you're 1-0 up you want to take all three but if you'd asked me before the game I would've accepted a point.
"I suppose I'll be the happier manager - I'm happy with the points we've taken from MK Dons.
"We're making steady progress and we're getting points on the board, whereas other teams have come up and not managed to do that.
"They're fighting relegation from a relegation position. We might be still fighting relegation, but we're not fighting it from a relegation position at the moment."
