Hiperadobe Construction With Earth Bags

The document describes the Hiperadobe construction method, developed by Fernando Pacheco. Hiperadobe is an evolution of the Superadobe method, which uses polypropylene mesh bags filled with a sand and clay mixture to build walls. The Hiperadobe uses a cheaper mesh called Raschel for the bags. The walls are built by stacking layers of filled bags, ensuring that they interlock to form a solid structure. The process allows

Hiperadobe: Construction with bags of earth.

In ancient times, the first houses and cities were built from raw earth. Today, to build our homes we use materials
with high embodied energy, which are difficult to recycle and which sometimes even incorporate toxic elements.
There may be more than justified reasons to once again claim the simplicity and properties of earth as a
construction material.

Fernando Pacheco from Brazil has evolved the superabe (construction with earthbags) and has created this system,
much faster, ecological and economical.

Construction with earth bags. Hyperadobe.

From Superadobe, created by the Iranian Nader Khalili,
Hiperadobe was developed by Fernando Pacheco, from EcoOca
in Brazil. The big difference between the two is that Superadobe
uses polypropylene bags woven with barbed wire between the
layers, while Hiperadobe uses a raschel weave, the same
material used in fruit packaging. This leads to a lower cost
compared to polyethylene bags.

Raschel is a knitted fabric that resembles hand knitted fabrics, fabrics, lace and mesh. Raschel warp knits contain
inlays to connect the threads, as well as knit columns.

To build vertical walls there is no need for barbed wire between the layers, since with the openings of the fabric, the
top of the bottom layer merges with the bottom of the top layer.

The dream begins with the selection of the site and the markings on
the ground.

The construction of the foundations use shapes that allow curves.

11/8/2018 Hiperadobe: Construction with bags of earth.

The foundation has already been done. The entrance frame is the first piece before starting to place the
Hiperadobe.

11/8/2018 Hiperadobe: Construction with bags of earth.

The Hiperadobe layers begin with the soil chosen for the work, which is usually approximately 70% sand and
30% clay, but this can vary. It should have a good moisture content, neither too wet nor too dry, and this
comes with practice.

http://www.bajatec.net/construccion-eficiente-sostenible/construccion-con-bolsas-de-tierra-hyperadobe 5/29
11/8/2018 Hiperadobe: Construction with bags of earth.

To facilitate the placement of the mesh, it is necessary to put a funnel inside the roll. Four hands work better
than two. The ideal is to have two funnels so that when one is finished, the other is ready.

http://www.bajatec.net/construccion-eficiente-sostenible/construccion-con-bolsas-de-tierra-hyperadobe 6/29
11/8/2018 Hiperadobe: Construction with bags of earth.

We invented a hanger with a strap to make it easier to hold the funnel.

http://www.bajatec.net/construccion-eficiente-sostenible/construccion-con-bolsas-de-tierra-hyperadobe 7/29
11/8/2018 Hiperadobe: Construction with bags of earth.
The funnel should be held with both hands at chest level. Stretch the bag a little, bend the tip in your direction
near where the layer will start. Step on the end of the bag when adding soil to gain full control of the material.

When the soil reaches the bottom of the funnel, take a small step back.

http://www.bajatec.net/construccion-eficiente-sostenible/construccion-con-bolsas-de-tierra-hyperadobe 8/29
11/8/2018 Hiperadobe: Construction with bags of earth.

This is the ideal curvature to form the layer, and thus prevent the appearance of cracks.

The interlacing of the layers is very important.

http://www.bajatec.net/construccion-eficiente-sostenible/construccion-con-bolsas-de-tierra-hyperadobe 9/29
11/8/2018 Hiperadobe: Construction with bags of earth.

The more we settle it by tamping each layer, the better. The tamping tool is wrapped in plastic to prevent it
from sticking to the clay soil. Look how all the joints between the walls are interconnected.

The more compact (tamped) the soil, the more solid the layer will be.

http://www.bajatec.net/construccion-eficiente-sostenible/construccion-con-bolsas-de-tierra-hyperadobe 10/29
11/8/2018 Hiperadobe: Construction with bags of earth.

The sex of those who do the tampering does not matter so that the work turns out well...

The bag unrolls from the funnel naturally by the weight of the earth as it falls.

http://www.bajatec.net/construccion-eficiente-sostenible/construccion-con-bolsas-de-tierra-hyperadobe 11/29
11/8/2018 Hiperadobe: Construction with bags of earth.

Align the wall with the external foundation wall, and subsequent layers will align naturally. We must also
respect the alignment of the door.

This template is placed as a guide until the window is permanently fixed.

http://www.bajatec.net/construccion-eficiente-sostenible/construccion-con-bolsas-de-tierra-hyperadobe 12/29
11/8/2018 Hiperadobe: Construction with bags of earth.

An entire layer (with soil and cement) was placed above the window to facilitate completion. Look at the two
pieces of reinforcing steel.

Here is another permanent window frame. You can see how several rows of bags were cut to accommodate this
frame.

http://www.bajatec.net/construccion-eficiente-sostenible/construccion-con-bolsas-de-tierra-hyperadobe 13/29
11/8/2018 Hiperadobe: Construction with bags of earth.

The funnel was made from the sheet metal of an old refrigerator. The bag fits tightly around the funnel, but
should not be too tight or too loose, so that the bag does not get caught in the funnel or come down too quickly
when placing soil in the bag.

When a run comes to an end, we use a knife or scissors to cut the material, close the layer and start again.

http://www.bajatec.net/construccion-eficiente-sostenible/construccion-con-bolsas-de-tierra-hyperadobe 14/29
11/8/2018 Hiperadobe: Construction with bags of earth.

When you reach the end, give the bag a good shake to consolidate the soil; twist the tip of the bag, and put
it under the coat. Next, we can start another layer that connects with the previous layer.

Here we can see how to twist the tip of the bag and put it under the cape.

http://www.bajatec.net/construccion-eficiente-sostenible/construccion-con-bolsas-de-tierra-hyperadobe 15/29
Here you can see how the two layers end up in the same place, which is not good.

http://www.bajatec.net/construccion-eficiente-sostenible/construccion-con-bolsas-de-tierra-hyperadobe 16/29
11/8/2018 Hiperadobe: Construction with bags of earth.

We are raising the walls uniformly throughout the house.

Seven people working eight hours a day, we reached this point in 15 days.

Everything we did came from our intuition and our love for planet Earth, which also drives our lives.

http://www.bajatec.net/construccion-eficiente-sostenible/construccion-con-bolsas-de-tierra-hyperadobe 17/29

And here you see a building built with Hiperadobe, once finished.

Something of the roof was missing… or at least the logic of it.

The roofs for this type of construction must most of the time be lightened, they are usually made of
wood and covered with tile, but it depends on the material you have on hand, with this same
technique you can make domes that work by compression, another option is to consider self-
supporting roofs, I suggest that you review very effective reciprocal structures for this type of
construction.

Hello friends, along with greeting you, I introduce myself as Paolo Macaya, a construction engineering
student, Chilean, and the reason why I am writing to you is to request more information about the system,
books or bibliography in general. Since I am currently doing a study (degree work) of the Hiperadobe
system, a construction system that I find fantastic. I hope you can help me and give me a contact email
where we can communicate and strengthen ties, since I would like to know much more about the system.
Thank you very much in advance and I await your response, greetings…

Hello Pablo, I would very much like to be able to contact you, I am also Chilean and I am very
interested in learning more about this construction system, I imagine that by now, you will have
documented yourself a little more. For my part, my work is not directly related to the area of the
constitution, but I would like to build my house with this system, but I see that here in Chile from
what I have researched this is in its infancy. I will appreciate your response.

Cuban, the internet here is finally not useful for me to be able to download.
I would like all the help you can give me, in fact I will have to ignore because those bags are animals in
danger of extinction here...but you know what, the Cuban always finds the way

Look in the areas where potatoes or oranges are produced in your countries. They use these rolls and
will know of suppliers.

October 12, 2013 at 7:58 pm Hello friends, the truth is that I am more and more excited about my
construction project in hyperadobe, I love them, for ecological, artistic if you can say and economic reasons,
I am very interested in the subject that is why I have been studying materials a while ago and I only have
one question, I hope you or someone else can answer it for me, and it is the following, in the last image you
can see a square house with rounded corners, could I make one like that but with 2 floors? That is, first floor
and one above? I would need to make the bases much more reinforced, how much approximately? I await
your response, thank you very much

Is it possible to obtain these bags of plant fiber without any chemical treatment?
Do you know where in Spain?
Is it necessary to stabilize the mixture of soils that are introduced into the soils with lime?
Is it possible that my email is transferred to your database to receive the news that you publish?
