PRESENTATION ON
SAFETY IN TEMPORARY
ELECTRICAL
INSTALLATIONS
A FAMOUS SAY ON ELECTRICITY
• ELECTRICITY IS A GOOD SERVANT
BUT
IT IS A BAD MASTER.
What is Electricity?
The Flow of electrons from one atom to
another atom is called electricity.
What is current?
Rate of flow of electricity is called current.
TYPES OF CURRENTS
• AC -- ALTERNATING CURRENT.
• DC -- DIRECT CURRENT.
CAUSES FOR ELECTRICAL
ACCIDENTS
• HUMAN ERRORS
• EQUIPMENT FAILURES
• NATURAL CAUSES
ELECTRICAL PROTECTIVE
DEVICES
1. Fuses
2. Relays
a) Earth fault relay
b) Over current relay
c) Under / Over voltage relay
d) Bucholtz relay.
3. Circuit Breakers
4. Lightning Arrestors
5. Earthings
Need for temporary Electrical
Installation
• Used for rescue operations
• Used for salvaging activities
• Used in accident spots
• Used for testing purpose
• Used in construction sites
• Normally not used for production activity
• Used for short duration
Types of Temporary Electrical
Installations
1. Indoor
2. Out-door
Safety Precautions to be taken
At Indoor sites
• Use only quality materials, equipments and accessories.
• Engage only qualified technicians
• Ensure the parameters are not exceeded.
• Maintain constant supervision
• Maintain the area neat, clean and well ventilated and no
obstructions.
• Keep sufficient No. Fire Extinguishers ( DCP, CO2 ) to
extinguish electrical fire.
• Erect the electrical equipments properly
• Ensure there is no toxic/ explosive gases are present at
the work spot.
• Display caution boards.
• Obtain necessary work permits.
• Ensure proper earthing is done.
• Carry out meggar test before energizing any
electrical equipment.
• Restrict unauthorised entry.
• Use PPEs as required
• Provide adequate lighting
• Remove the temporary facilities once the job is
completed and close the work permits.
Safety Precautions to be taken
At out-door sites
In addition to all the above precautions
ensure the following additional precautions
are taken.
• Provide waterproof shelter for the electrical
appliances.
• Keep sufficient No. Fire Extinguishers ( DCP,
CO2 ) to extinguish electrical fire.
• Cordon off the area to restrict unauthorised
entry of the public.
• protect the wires, cables from mechanical
damage and from changing weather conditions
At out-door sites
• Ensure the equipments, wiring do not
submerge in to water
• Use PPEs as required
• Obtain necessary work permits and also
statutory approvals if required.
• Use Safety belts when working on heights.
• Ensure the First-Aid box is available.
• Take the help of police, local administration on
need basis
• Remove the temporary facilities once the job is
completed and close the work permits.
Last but not the least
• Accidents do not happen. They are
Caused
• Let us not make electricity our MASTER
• Let us make it our SERVANT
