Character Sketches – Julius Caesar

(Act 1 & 2)
CONSPIRATORS AGAINST JULIUS CAESAR

Marcus Brutus
A noble Roman and close friend of Caesar. He joins the conspiracy
thinking it will save Rome. Honest but easily influenced by others.

Cassius
A clever and jealous man who dislikes Caesar's power. He is the main
planner of the conspiracy and convinces Brutus to join.

Casca
A blunt and sarcastic man. He is the first to stab Caesar and believes
in signs and omens. He dislikes Caesar’s rise to power.

Trebonius
One of the conspirators. He does not stab Caesar but distracts Antony
to keep him away during the murder.

Ligarius
A sick Roman who joins the conspiracy because he trusts Brutus. He
shows his loyalty by standing up even when unwell.

Decius Brutus
A conspirator who flatters Caesar and tricks him into going to the
Senate on the day of the murder by reinterpreting Calpurnia’s dream.

Metellus Cimber
A conspirator who asks Caesar to bring back his banished brother.
This is used as a trick to get close to Caesar before killing him.
Cinna
Another conspirator who helps plan Caesar’s murder. He also places
fake letters in Brutus’s house to influence him.

Flavius
A Roman official who is against Caesar’s rising power. He scolds the
common people for celebrating Caesar and removes decorations from
Caesar’s statues.

Marullus
Another Roman official who supports the Republic. He is upset that the
people have forgotten Pompey and now praise Caesar.

Artemidorus
A wise Roman who tries to warn Caesar. He writes a letter listing the
names of the conspirators, but Caesar ignores it.

Cinna (the Poet)


A poor poet who is mistaken for Cinna the conspirator. He is attacked
and killed by an angry mob, showing the chaos after Caesar’s death.

FRIENDS OF BRUTUS AND OF CASSIUS


Lucilius
A loyal follower of Brutus. He pretends to be Brutus during the battle to
protect him and is captured by Antony’s men.

Titinius
A close friend of Cassius. When Cassius dies, Titinius is heartbroken
and kills himself out of loyalty and grief.
Messala
A brave soldier and trusted ally of Brutus and Cassius. He brings
important news and helps during the battle.

Young Cato
A brave young man and relative of Brutus. He fights fearlessly in the
battle but is killed while defending the Republican cause.

Volumnius
An old and trusted friend of Brutus. Brutus asks him to help with his
suicide, but Volumnius refuses, saying it is not right.

SERVANTS OR OFFICERS ATTENDING BRUTUS

Varro
A servant of Brutus. He stays with Brutus during the war and is loyal,
though he plays a small role in the play.

Clitus
One of Brutus’s servants. Brutus asks him to help with his suicide, but
Clitus refuses because he loves Brutus.

Claudius
Another servant of Brutus. He is loyal and obedient but has a very
minor role in the play.

Strato
Brutus’s faithful servant. Unlike the others, he agrees to hold Brutus’s
sword so that Brutus can kill himself with honour.

Lucius
A young servant of Brutus. He plays the lute (musical instrument) and
is innocent, loyal, and kind-hearted.
Dardanius
A servant of Brutus. Like Clitus, he refuses to kill Brutus when asked,
showing his loyalty and sorrow.

Labeo
Mentioned as a soldier fighting in Brutus’s army. He is not shown
directly but is referenced in the war scenes.

Calpurnia

Caesar’ s wife. She loves him deeply and begs him not to go to the
Senate after seeing a bad dream. She believes in omens and tries to
protect him.

27. Portia

Brutus’ s wife. She is strong, brave, and loyal. She knows something is
troubling Brutus and begs him to share his secrets, showing her deep
concern and love.

28. Pindarus

A servant of Cassius. He wrongly reports that Titinius has been


captured, which causes Cassius to take his own life. He follows
Cassius’ s final order and helps him die.

Soothsayer

A fortune-teller who warns Caesar to “ Beware the Ides of March.”


Caesar ignores him, but his warning comes true. He represents fate
and the ignored signs of danger.
