Grey College Chess Tournament


21–22 February 2025
We are pleased to invite your school to participate in the Grey College Yearly Chess Tournament.
Grey College, in partnership with the Southern Free State Chess Union, will host this prestigious high
school team chess tournament on 21–22 February 2025, at our Bloemfontein campus. The tournament
is open to all high schools across South Africa, with each team consisting of four bona fide learners
from the participating school.
Entry Fees and Team Composition:

 Entry fees are R1,500.00 per team, which includes four players and a maximum of two
coaches, educators, managers, or bus drivers.
 Any additional players or adults will incur an extra fee of R250 per person.
 Schools wishing to enter more than one team are welcome to do so and should indicate this on
the forthcoming entry form.
Tournament Format:

 The competition will be a five-round Swiss team tournament, with a time control of
60 minutes per player per round, plus a 2-second increment per move.
 The tournament will feature two main sections:
o Section A (with a maximum of two teams per school)
 Only space available for 16 Teams.
o Section B, along with an additional
 Only space available for 30 Teams.
o Prestigious Tournament, which is by invitation only.

Supervision Requirements:

 Each team must be accompanied by an adult supervisor or coach who has full authority to act
on behalf of the team and school.
 Please note that participants are required to bring their own chess clocks.
 We look forward to your school's participation in what promises to be a challenging and
rewarding event.

BASIC INFORMATION

1. Tournament Format:
Tournament will use a 60/60-time control with a +2 second increment per move. It will be held
in the Centenary Hall.
2. Entry forms:

3. Chess Clocks:
Each team is required to provide two chess clocks. A limited number of clocks will be available
for hire.
4. Registration:
Registration begins at 12:00 on the day of the tournament. Electronic registration is also
available.
5. Friday Dinner:
Light dinner for all players will be served from 17:00. Staff, coaches, and managers are invited
to a Welcoming Function starting at 16:30.
6. Saturday Lunch:
Lunch packets for Saturday will be available from 11:00.
7. Payment Details:
Final payment must be made by 3 February 2025. Please use the following bank details for
