PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION CHECKLIST

Misfire

Evaluator: Student: Date:

Condition:
Given a mounted 60mm mortar, a crew, dummy ammunition and a simulated malfunction,
conduct misfire procedures in handheld mode in order to continue operations.

Standard:
To achieve mastery, you must perform each of the performance steps correctly and continue
operations.

Attempt: 1st 2nd 3rd

PERFORMANCE STEPS PASS FAIL


1. Squeeze trigger a second time to confirm malfunction.
2. Announce "Misfire."
3. Place firing selector on "S."
4. Without inverting the cannon, attempt to dislodge round by
bouncing the mortar at least 6 inches from the ground as required.
a. Maintain positive control of the weapon.
5. Place firing selector on "T."
6. Squeeze trigger twice.
7. If round does not fire, place firing selector on "S" and support the
mortar with sandbags, logs or empty ammo boxes and check for
heat with finger tips from just below the muzzle to the base (during
peacetime, the squad should back off the gun line 50 meters for one
minute).
a. Brace the mortar in a safe direction.
8. Check for heat using the back of the hands.
a. Back off the gun 50 meters to the rear and offsetting to the left or right of the
gun.
9. Ensure squad leader places hands around muzzle.
a. Communicate verbally with the assistant gunner.
b. Slowly lift the cannon from the horizontal position.
c. Listen for ammunition movement in cannon.
10. If round slides out of cannon, ensure squad leader stops the round
with the meaty portions of his thumbs, removes it from bore, and
passes it to the ammunition handler.
11. Ensure ammunition man reinserts the safety pin then inspects the
round.
a. Replace increments as required.
b. Inspect the ammunition for dented primer or damage.
c. Re-pack ammunition as required.
d. If the primer is not dented and the safety pin can be inserted, attempt to fire
on an adjacent gun.
12. Ensure ammunition man places suspect round in dud pit, if
necessary.
13. Swab cannon and relay mortar to continue the fire mission.
a. Inspect cannon for serviceability.
14. If round will not slide out of cannon, ensure cannon is maintained
in a horizontal position and pointed down range and placed in a
designated dud pit.
a. Maintain positive control of the mortar.
b. Move the cannon to the left or right of the gun line and place on the ground
with the cannon pointed down range.
c. Locate the dud pit.
15. Notify EOD.
End of PECL.
