1. George Washington was a multi-talented person. It was his as an

army general that helped achieve victory over the British.

2. George Washington served his country in peace and war. His illustrious war
record made him the natural choice for the nation’s presidency.

3. Following his victory, Washington became the nation’s first president. At that time the

country was comprised of just thirteen states.

4. Mount Vernon belonged to the Washington family for almost two hundred years. The

family renovated the property in the 1660s.

5. George Washington was heedful of Mount Vernon during his prolonged absences. He

regularly with his cousin Lund, who managed the estate.

6. George Washington depended on Lund to manage the affairs of Mount Vernon. He was

lucky to have such a capable person as acquisition of the property.

7. In the 1700s, weeks could pass before a reply to a letter was received. Because of this,

Washington allowed his manager much in running the estate.

1. Do you ever wonder where oranges come from? They were probably picked by a migrant

farmworker in a Florida or California grove.

2. Migrant farming has little appeal for most people. Because of its long hours and low pay,

it is often considered work.

3. Migrant workers are not paid by the hour but by how much they pick. Even a brief

from their labor means a smaller paycheck.

4. Lack of affordable housing is a major concern of migrant farmworkers. Often the only

options are small without electricity or running water.

5. It is difficult for migrant workers to find better-paying jobs. Lack of opportunity for
