Introduction
The National Book Trust, India, is an autonomous body established by the Government of India
(Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education) in the year 1957, to promote books and
reading in the country.
The Trust has been a pioneer of children’s literature in the post-independent India. Arguably
the biggest multi-lingual publisher of books for children in India, the Trust brings out colourful and
well-illustrated books for various age groups in 13 major Indian languages including English. In all,
we have published books for children in more than 50 Indian languages on an experimental basis.
All books for children are published under the series Nehru Bal [Link] series aims at creating
a treasure-house of enjoyable and informative literature. Books in this series cater to five age-groups,
namely, pre-school, 6-8, 8-10, 10-12 and 12-14. Some novellas for the age group 14+ are also published
under the series.
Under the Nehru Bal Pustakalaya series, a new sub-series Veergatha has been initiated. Veergatha
series consists of illustrated books for children of the age-group 10-12, and seeks to introduce to
them the great acts of bravery of Param Vir Chakra awardees to instil a sense of inspiration and
patriotism. Another sub-series Indian Fiction for Young Adults has been added to Nehru Bal
Pustakalaya series. The aim of this publishing initiative is to introduce modern classic stories written
for children and young readers authored by some of the major novelists/ short story writers in
different Indian languages including English.
The Trust has come up with a new sub-series Bilingual editions for children as per the guidelines
of the National Education Policy 2020 with the objective to create supplementary reading materials
for children to help them adapt suitably to the multilingual fabric of the country.
This annotated catalogue gives detailed information about all titles published for children in English
and their available Indian language editions. Further, the recommended age-group has been indicated
against each title’s entry to make this catalogue user-friendly for parents as well as teachers. Books can
