Know the different Filipino Social Thinkers and their famous works
Appreciate the works of these Filipino Social Thinkers.
Discussion:

I.Filipino Social Thinkers

A. Jose Rizal
Intelligence is the solution to the ills of the country
Started the La Liga Filipina with a goal to enlighten the minds of the Filipino people
Believed that the Philippines be a part of Spain, and that Filipinos must enjoy the same rights as
to what the Spaniards have.

B. Isabelo delos Reyes


Father of Filipino Socialism
Initiated strikes against American business firms
Organized the first labor union, Union Obrera Democratica Filipina
Founder of the Philippine Independent Church or Iglesia Filipina Independiente , with Gregorio
Aglipay being the head of the church.

C. Marcelo H. Del Pilar


known for his pen name Plaridel ,Piping Dilat, and Dolores Manapat
co-founded “Diyaryong Tagalog”, the first Philippine bilingual newspaper
common themes of his works are the abuses and atrocities of Spanish friars, some notable
works are, “Pagibig sa Tinubuang Lupa”, “Caiigat Cayo”, “Dasalan at Tocsohan”, “Amain
Namin” , “Aba Ginoong Barya”.

D. Zeus Salazar
is a Filipino historian and proponent of Pantayong Pananaw, a self-reflective view in the
study of Philippine history
believes that Philippine history must be studied and understood using the context of the
Filipinos, and must be free from foreign biases.

II. Institute of Philippine Culture’s Study on Filipino Values

A. Values- standards used in making a decision, can be classified as goals towards something
that an individual must strive for.
B. Filipino Values- refers to the set of values or the value system that majority of the Filipinos
have historically held important in their lives.

Filipino Values can be divided into many themes:


A. Smoothness of Interpersonal Relationships
Pakikisama
Euphimism or indirect expressions that replace words and phrases considered harsh and
impolite
B. Shame and Self-esteem
Hiya
Amor Propio or a sense of self esteem or self love that prevents a person from
swallowing his or her pride.

C. Economic Security and Social Mobility


Reciprocity – it refers to a situation wherein Filipinos ensure that every favour asked
must be returned
Contractual Reciprocity- refers to a voluntary agreement between 2 or more
individuals to have in a particular manner in a specific time in the future.
Quasi-contractual Reciprocity- reciprocity is automatic and prior arrangements are
not needed. Ex. Abuloy
Utang na Loob or Debt of Gratitude- generated when an exchange of goods and
services take place between individuals coming from different groups.
- Characterized by unequal repayment with no prior agreement whether implicit
or explicit.

Activity 10:
In not more than 5 sentences, answer the following questions (10 points each question).

1. Do you agree with the idea of Rizal that the Philippines must be a part of Spain? Why
or Why not?
2. In your own opinion, can practicing the value of Utang na Loob lead to the downfall
of an individual? Why or why not?
