The AFP’s primary functions are to uphold the sovereignty of the Philippines, support the
Constitution, and defend the country against all enemies, both foreign and domestic. It also
promotes and advances national interests and policies, and performs such other functions as may be
provided by law or assigned by higher authorities.

The AFP is composed of a citizen armed force that undergoes military training and serves
as needed. It is organized to allow for rapid expansion from a peacetime organization to a wartime
or emergency organization. The AFP also maintains a regular force of officers and enlisted
personnel.

The AFP is organized into General Headquarters, the Major Services ( Army, Air Force,
Navy, and Constabulary), and other existing units, services, and commands. The Secretary of National
Defense may create additional units or reorganize the AFP as needed.

The AFP has three types of services: basic, technical, and administrative. Enlisted
personnel must belong to one of the basic services. The tecnical services include the Medical Corps,
Dental Service, Nurse Corps, Veterinary Corps, and Judge Advocate General Service. The
administrative service consists of the Chaplain Service, Women Auxiliary Corps, Medical
Administrative Corps, and Corps of Professors.

The Citizen Armed Force is composed of all reservists and officers and enlisted men on
inactive status. It is organized into Geographical Units throughout the country. Whenever necessary,
the Citizen Armed Force may be called or mobilized to complement the regular force.

The Major Services and the other units of the AFP may be organized into such commands,
forces, and organizations as may be prescribed by the Secretary of National Defense. The territory of
the Philippines may be divided into tactical and geographical areas as needed.

The Organizational Structure of the AFP is designed to provide for centralized direction
and control, decentralized execution of operations, common doctrine and procedures self reliance,
and the capability to participate in infrastructure projects.

GENERAL HEADQUARTERS
The General Headquarters of the AFP is responsible for providing military
advice and staff support to the Secretary of National Defense. It also has a wide
range of other responsibilities, including;

• Preparing strategic plans and providing strategic direction for the AFP
• Developing integrated logistic and mobilization palns
• Providing intelligence support to the AFP
• Reviewing personnel, material, and logistic requirement
• Overseeing the plans and programs of the Major Services and separate units
