OptiHeat units are equipped with electronic expansion valve controlled by the Aurora Base microprocessor to offer precise control
of the vapor injection circuit. While the units are optimized for heating performance, cooling is still an option with reversible units.
In the cooling mode, VI technology is turned off to maintain simplicity and efficient performance.
1. Compressor: Vapor injected, single speed scroll, mounted on a double isolation system. Super Quiet Sound Package for im-
proved noise reduction.
2. Water Lines: Flush mount connections allow one wrench leak-free connections without a back-up.
3. Cabinet: Heavy gauge, environmentally responsible galvanized steel for maximum corrosion resistance.
4. Soft Start: IntelliStart™ reduces the amount of current needed to activate the unit by 60-70%. This helps alleviate light flicker,
reduces start-up noise and increases compressor life. Helpful in applications when WaterFurnace units are to run off-the-grid.
5. ThermaShield™: Proprietary coating applied to water-to-refrigerant heat exchanger that protects against condensations in
extended range applications (below 50˚F).
6. Discharge line mufflers to help quiet compressor discharge gas pulsations
7. Electronic expansion valve for optimal superheat control of VI circuit
8. Controls: Aurora Base Control with Aurora Expansion Board is standard.
Key Benefits:
• 3 models sizes from 040-066 MBtu/hr.
• Same NSW cabinet footprint for easy retrofit of legacy product.
• Field switchable control box
As a leader in the industry, WaterFurnace is dedicated to innovation, quality, and customer satisfaction. In fact, every unit built is
exposed to a wide range of quality control procedures throughout the assembly process and is then subjected to a rigorous bat-
tery of computerized run tests to certify that it meets or exceeds performance standards for efficiency and safety, and will perform
flawlessly at startup. As further affirmation of our quality standards, each unit carries our exclusive Quality Assurance emblem,
signed by the final test technician.
WaterFurnace International’s corporate headquarters ISO 9001:2008 and manufacturing facility is located in Fort Wayne, IN. A sce-
nic three-acre pond located in front of the building serves as our geothermal heating and cooling source to comfort-condition our
110,000 square feet of manufacturing and office space. As a pioneer, and now a leader in the industry, the team of WaterFurnace
engineers, customer support staff, and skilled assembly technicians is dedicated to providing the finest comfort systems available.

External Control
An external controller is necessary for operation. For water storage tank set point control the HydroStat HSC, HZC, and HZ0
were designed specifically for our Geo-Storage Tanks. A field supplied aquastat may also be used as the external control
to the heat pump. If zoning is required, the Hydrologic Zone Panels and Control system can provide up to eight zones of
closed loop hydronic heating and cooling.
HydroLogic features:
• Operates radiant floor heating
• Operates hydronic fan coil heating and cooling
• 4 zones expandable to 8 zones
• Communicating 2 wire controls
• Controls 2 stages of compressors with rotation
• Controls backup heat source
• Intelligent heat/cool switchover
• Fahrenheit or Celsius
• Outdoor reset
• Indoor temperature feedback
• Warm weather shutdown

With single-speed equipment, both the minimum and maximum settings for modulating water valves should be the same. This uniform setting ensures consistent flow and pressure, maintaining system stability and avoiding inefficiencies that might arise from variable valve settings that suit multi-speed equipment .
When using water-to-water heat pumps with untreated water, it is important to engage a qualified water treatment specialist to prevent issues such as scaling, erosion, corrosion, algae, or slime. Inadequate water treatment can compromise the heat pump's efficiency and longevity, potentially voiding warranties due to corrosion or failure of the primary heat exchanger .
The water-to-refrigerant heat exchangers in OptiHeat systems are designed with large, oversized coaxial structures that facilitate low-pressure drops and low flow rates, enhancing efficiency. They are pressure rated to high thresholds of 450 psi on the water side and 650 psi on the refrigerant side, which ensures robust performance under various operating conditions. Coatings like ThermaShield prevent condensation during low-temperature loop operations, further optimizing efficiency .
The IntelliStart feature in the OptiHeat system reduces the normal start current by 60-70%, which allows the heat pump to operate off-grid. This feature enhances the overall efficiency by reducing light flicker, startup noise, and improving the compressor's start behavior. These improvements contribute to a more reliable and quieter operation .
Using separate heat exchangers when coupling heat pumps to swimming pools or spas is necessary to prevent the primary heat exchanger from corrosion or failure. Direct coupling without a secondary heat exchanger can void warranties and cause damage due to the corrosive nature of pool and spa water, which typically contains chemicals that can deteriorate the heat pump components .
A closed loop heat pump system offers several advantages in commercial buildings. Firstly, it provides high energy efficiency as the heat pumps recover and redistribute heat, thereby reducing operating costs. Secondly, the system allows for individual unit maintenance without shutting down the entire system. Additionally, it offers flexibility in adding units as needed, which lowers initial costs and ensures comfortable conditions as individual units can cool and heat different areas simultaneously. Power billing is simplified as each unit can be individually metered .
The thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) in the OptiHeat system is used for precise refrigerant metering, ensuring efficient operation across a wide range of water temperatures from 30 to 150°F. The placement of the TXV in the compressor compartment facilitates easy access for maintenance and servicing, which is crucial for operational reliability .
The Aurora™ Control System manages energy consumption during peak demand periods by utilizing a 'Smart Grid-On Peak' input that allows utilities to control the unit's power consumption. This is achieved through actions such as disabling the compressor operation, adjusting thermostat settings, or limiting compressor capacity during peak periods. The system also indicates these adjustments by displaying a flash code on a Green LED and through communicating thermostats .
The two current transducers in the compressor monitoring system of the OptiHeat are used to monitor the compressor's current and starting characteristics. They help detect faults such as open circuits or welded contactor issues, triggering an E10 fault code if abnormalities are identified. This monitoring ensures timely maintenance and helps prevent further damage .
The communication ports P6 and P8 in the OptiHeat system are significant as they are dedicated for future expansion through specialized protocols. This foresight in design indicates that the system can accommodate future technological advancements or integrations, enhancing its adaptability for long-term use .
