Peace Square forms the core of the city since the beginning of the first third of the 13th century (the reign of Ottokar I.) It has an irregular rectangular shape with dimensions of 75-90 × 180-195 metres. It is very large, about 2 hectares. This is the evidence of its importance during the Middle Ages, when the square was used as the main marketplace.
Original trough with water was in 1541 replaced by wooden pipes and upper wooden fountain and lower stone fountain were built. From 1839 to 1859 the whole square and town was paved. In 1856, after a cholera epidemic sewerage network was constructed.
Most of the houses in the square is the Gothic style. Inside and on the facades but you can see marks of many architectural styles from Gothic to the 20th century.
