Version History:

Superceeds MS-DOS® 3.3x. This 4.00 release is the domestic retail version. Microsoft® Corporation had been approached by Siemens in Germany to write a multitasking OEM version of DOS in 1986, which they did. It saw limited service, and like other non-U.S. versions the numbering schema was not parallel to domestic releases. The version shown here is the actual U.S. release of 4.00 that was written by IBM (their first lead on OS production). This was the first non-OEM Microsoft version to upgrade partition support beyond 32MB. Also notable is this was the end of the line in DOS history for true "OEM" releases (total system compatibility had been reached worldwide). Up to this point, hardware platforms had required special low-level code in IO.SYS / IBMBIO.COM to support their architecture. With the practice of calling third party distributions "OEM" going forward with later versions, the term has been somewhat abused.
