The town’s name is an abbreviation or colloquialization of the word “Perhentian” (stop in Malay), a name likely derived from sailors who sought out shelter from rough winds on the Straits of Malacca in the past. Sungai Pontian Besar Delta also served as the main stop for fishermen to unload their catch and some say it was also a prominent ambush point for pirates in the past.

Pontian
Pontian is used in the names of two towns in the district, Pontian Besar and Pontian Kechil, of which the latter serves as district capital. Flanked by the Straits of Malacca, the district is a celebrated seafood haven, boasting both variety and inexpensive pricing. The town of Kukup in particular is dubbed a seafood lover’s mecca.
No visit to Johor is complete without a visit to a pineapple plantation, and it is in Pontian where you can savour the saccharine love affair between Johor and pineapples. Take your time exploring the Pineapple Museum, NICTE Farm and Ladang Nenas, where you’ll get to taste some of the juiciest pineapples the district has to offer.
Pontian is also home to two national parks, namely Tanjung Piai and Pulau Kukup, where magnificent mangrove forests teeming with wildlife can be explored comfortably via wooden boardwalks that lead to the southernmost point of mainland Asia.
