Brazil declared war on Germany on 21st October 1917 in response to Germany's aggressive U-Boat campaign in the Atlantic. Although Brazil contributed no frontline soldiers to the Western front as the allies had initially hoped they did contribute to allied naval power in the Atlantic and also sent a Medical Mission to the Western Front. Aside from the Naval Division and the hospital with 100 medics individual Brazilians also fought on the allied side. There were at least eight Brazilian pilots in trained by the British. A Brazilian Naval Officer fought at the Battle of Jutland. But the most famous Brazilian in action in the First World War was Jos Pessoa Cavalcanti de Albuquerque who was a Dragoon Officer in the French army. His experience with Renault F-17's led to the establishment of the first armoured units in the Brazilian army. Today General Albuquerque is remembered as "The Father of the Brazilian Armoured Forces".
