What color is the Texas flag? Red, White and Blue? Not really. Mr. Jaffer states further:
135 Light Yellowish Green 0.7g 7.4 5.2 #007BA7 looks blue. (The code referenced for #135 in the color dictionary for Light Almond Green is #9AB973, so I will use that here. #007BA7, a duplicate, is used for #167 Vivid Greenish Blue and #170, Deep Greenish Blue. The color dictionary references and Jaffer's PDF file both give the same #007BA7 for #167 and #170. Munsell numbers are also the same. A transposition error could satisfy this. Both are very dark aqua (Pourpre), but #167 is greener. Let's denote #167 as #00A77B, assuming that G is moved to B and B to G. -JCF)
9 Pinkish White 5.8r 9.0 0.8 #F9DBC8 looks whiter than #263 White 2.5pb 9.5 0.2 #FFC9D7. (The code referenced for #9 in the color dictionary for Pink Tint is also #F9DBC8. I solved the pink problem by fixing the white. -JCF)
263 White 2.5pb 9.5 0.2 #FFC9D7 is very pink. (The code referenced for #263 in the color dictionary for Chaste is also #FFC9D7. A Munsell color converter obtained from GretagMacbeth for the Munsell code here gives 242,243,244 #F2F3F4, a better white. This is about as close as the Munsell range gets to 255,255,255 #FFFFFF pure RGB white.)
#CFDFF9 sky blueish white (Pourpre) is better than #F9DFCF as listed which equates to orangish white (Pourpre) for #189 bluish white and looks like a transposition error R for B and B for R. -JCF

"Color in Philately". This book was published by The Philatelic Foundation in 1979. Library of Congress Catalogue Card Number: 78-66390. It is a most comprehensive text on the subject and goes into such things as the basic concepts of colour identification, a review of colour naming systems, printing inks, papers and non-destructive techniques such as reflectance spectrophotometry and X-ray spectrometry. It includes reports on studies on a number of classic stamps and their colours and shades. It is safe to say that definitive colour of a stamp can be determined. At the end of the book is also a set of colour charts that identify the major colour groups and variations on them.

In August 1981, the American Philatelist included an article entitled "APS Manual for Determining Color Designations of Stamp Colors". A committee of the APS and the Inter-Society Color Council proposed that a system that is based upon the Universal Color Language be used. This system is based upon the Munsell color-order system, Centroid Colors and the Color Names Dictionary. It's all very complex and for anyone who wants to get into the subject, it's worth looking at this article.

In June 1982, the American Philatelist included a report by Fred W. Billmeyer, Jr. entitled "Universal Color Language Designations for Some Philatelic Color Aids". Billmeyer tested two standardized and commonly used collections of colours(Methune Handbook of Color and Stanley Gibbons Stamp Colour Key) to see if they were useful in classifying stamp colours. He found that there was significant variations in the colours identified in the Methune Handbook of Colors and that the handbook is not useful for "critical application to philatelic color designation".

The price for both was $41 before they were withdrawn from the market and are now considered obsolete. Danny Rich commented in 2002: Just keep in mind that the NBS Special Publ 440 listing is in terms of Munsell notations - illuminant C and the 1931 standard observer. The color names and spacing will not be correct for D50, most CRTs or any fluorescent lamp.

Color-Naming-Method (CNM) Shoji Tominaga (1985), extension of CNS. Names in the CNM are specified at one of four accuracy levels called fundamental, gross, medium, or minute. Names are mapped to Munsell spaces.

Beck, William H. Postage-Stamp Color Names, used as source "S" for NBS-ISCC color dictionary, which quotes, "Yellow is used in philately to refer to postage-stamp colors ranging from light brown and light yellowish pink on the one hand, to vivid yellow and vivid orange on the other." William H. Beck died in 1948. At the time of his death he was working with Judd at the NBS to generate a spectrophotometric system for percepted photopic "colors". His many years of work in this area was meticulously documented in hundreds of 11" X 14" hand written (in india ink) pages bound in large hard cover volumes. These volumes were hand carried to Judd and were in the process of review by Judd in the company of Mr. Beck. They were friends and shared a strong mutual interest in the definition of perceived colors. These volumes were apparently retained by Judd and not returned to the family. It would seem they were the source used by Judd and Kelly for their mutual NBS publication. When Judd died/retired Mr. Beck's volumes were discovered in his office at NBS. NBS looked for his survivors and found William H. Beck 3rd. The volumes were returned to him about 1980 and they were subsequently donated to the APS (American Philatelic Society). -Wm. H. Beck 3rd

Maerz and Paul, Color Name Dictionary, 56 color plates with 144 or 72 hues per plate (1st ed. 1930 used as source for NBS-ISCC color dictionary, 1st and 2nd ed. of 1950 have same 7056 hues and color list, 2nd ed has only some corrections, but a supplemental 2 page textile and Home and Garden color list). Dorothy Nickerson established Munsell designations for the first color plates in 1947, and established new Soil Color names in 1949.

Appendixes include adjectives of color, more than 1,000 colors arranged according to color groupings, and color phrases such as blue funk and scream blue murder. This unusual reference will appeal to writers, designers, artists and illustrators, art critics, decorators, and language enthusiasts. Sold out in US. Many copies available in UK. No color used, words only. First color tested, goose turd green, was not in it. Neither was the second, Chinese Green. The listing is similar to and refers to the Maerz&Paul; Color Dictionary of 1953.
