This is an amazing show, beautifully acted and simply beautiful to look at (early episodes this season were directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal, Lawrence Trilling, and Billy Gierhart), with a keen appreciation for faith and family and community that eludes even some of TV's more celebrated dramas.

Rectify has established itself as a trip worth taking, and for a discriminating few, at least, the protagonist’s slow road to redemption remains an utterly absorbing one.

In a way, the show is both complement and antithesis to the true-crime phenomena The Jinx and Serial; rather than attempt closure and a solution, it cares far more about how people live with the unknown.

Rectify is such a quiet, patient series that it takes awhile to realize how radical its storytelling is. Near the end of season two it seemed to rethink itself, and the first couple of episodes of season three suggest that the show is about to reinvent itself and shift its focus while trying to hold on to the qualities that made it so special--and frankly, peculiar.

The boldest new injection comes via flashback, a consistently and effectively utilized path into Daniel's headspace.

More times than not, this loving obsession with the details of lower-middle-income life makes up for the show's competent but overly plain production design and cinematography. Even more so, the show's symbology is often breathtakingly simple yet resonant.

The acting, character development, writing, and cinematography in Season 3 surpassed the excellence of Seasons 1 and 2. The way some scenes were shot this season were absolutely, and I don't think I have ever used this word in a Metacritic review, breathtaking. If it goes another year without an Emmy nod of any sort i will be shocked. TEN, all the way. Expand

It resolves the question of guilt or innocence in a way that is true to its own subtle perturbations. It deepens characters that are already complex, eliciting grudging sympathy for unappealing characters and disappointment in good ones. At the end, it perfectly balances hope and resignation, underscoring how fragile--and how essential--hope is. As in previous seasons, the writing, directing, and acting are uniformly superb, but I wish I could give this exceptional final season an "11." Expand

In one sense it's a study in relationships and in another it's a mystery story and in yet another a man's philosophical journey for meaning in a lonely world. It's up to the viewer which to focus on. The writers don't want viewers picking favorites it seems, previously unlikable characters now evoke sympathy and vice versa. Just when I felt I had a grasp, it seemed to slip and I am none the wiser.

A fine cast in southern gothic style, where the south looks very pretty and dressed preppily. The cinematography is as good as ever.
It was good idea on behalf the producers to just air 6 episodes for the 3rd season, brevity is clarity after all. Even still the one aspect of the show that will not appeal to some people is the pace. It is slow, probably deliberately over slow to emphasize the mundane nature for life even when you get off death row?

I have a feeling that season 4 will quicken quite a lot. My guess is that they will finish with a strong impact to reward its rather small audience for their support.
