Accepting Apple Pay is faster than accepting traditional credit and debit cards. Customers no longer need to spend time searching for their wallet and finding the right card to pay in shops. Within apps, your customers can check out with a single touch.
Every transaction on your customer’s iPhone or iPad requires Touch ID—our fingerprint identity sensor—authentication or passcode. And each time your customer takes their Apple Watch off their wrist, the passcode must be entered to access it. In addition, you don't receive your customer’s actual credit or debit card numbers, so you aren't handling actual credit or debit card numbers in your systems when they pay with Apple Pay.
How do I start accepting Apple Pay in my shop?
Apple Pay works with Visa, MasterCard, and American Express cards and existing payment providers.
To accept Apple Pay in your shop, you need to have a contactless payment-capable point of sale terminal. Contact your payment provider so they can set up your terminal, and tell them you would like to accept Apple Pay.
Here are some payment providers that support Apple Pay. If your payment service provider isn't listed, you should still check with them to learn how they can set up Apple Pay for you.
My point of sale terminal is already contactless payment-capable. Can I accept Apple Pay right away?
If you accept contactless payment today, you're likely able to accept Apple Pay without any changes. If you’re not already accepting contactless payments, contact your payment provider to verify that your point of sale setup can accept Apple Pay, and then ask them to enable it.
Are there additional fees to accept Apple Pay?
No. Apple doesn't charge any additional fees.
Are Apple Pay payments charged as card present or card not present?
Payments made using Apple Pay in shops are card present transactions. Payments made using Apple Pay within apps are card not present transactions.
Will I be liable for fraud on Apple Pay transactions?
Within shops, Apple Pay transactions are treated in the same way as your current credit and debit transactions. You'll have the same liability rules applied to Apple Pay transactions.
Within apps, Apple Pay transactions are treated more favorably than standard credit and debit cards transactions, and liability for the transaction is typically shifted to the issuer. Contact your payment provider to verify how you can benefit from liability shift for Apple Pay payments within your app.
How do I let my customers know they can pay with Apple Pay?
Display the contactless payment symbol and the Apple Pay mark prominently on your point of sale terminal to let your customers know they can use Apple Pay in your shop.
Download the mark to use on your terminal screen. Order Apple Pay decals to put on your shopfront window and register.
Go to Apple Pay for developers to learn how to let your customers know they can use Apple Pay within your app.
Do my customers need to enter a PIN when using Apple Pay?
No. As with contactless card transactions, a PIN isn't required when using Apple Pay.
How do I process returns with Apple Pay?
Use the Device Account Number to find the purchase and process the return, just like you would with a traditional credit or debit card payment. To see the last four or five digits of the Device Account Number on iPhone, ask the customer to go to Passbook, tap the card, and tap on the lower-right corner of the display. On Apple Watch, ask your customer to go to the Apple Watch app on iPhone, tap Passbook & Apple Pay, and tap the card used for payment.
You can also ask the customer to provide their credit or debit card and process the return using that card.
Can I accept transactions over £20 in my shop?
Apple Pay allows your customers to make easy and secure contactless payments at any amount. If your payment terminal or payment provider doesn’t support the latest network specifications, as with contactless debit and credit cards today, your customers might need to insert their card if the transaction amount is over £20.
To accept Apple Pay for transactions over £20, your payment terminal must be capable and configured properly, and your payment provider needs to support the latest network contactless specifications. Share the consumer device cardmember verification white paper with your payment provider and ask them how you can allow your customers to use Apple Pay for any amount.
