History/ Back ground

Wijeya Newspapers Limited formerly known as Wijeya Publications Limited was incorporated in 1979 with the primary object of printing and publishing newspapers and periodicals. Mr. Ranjit Sujiva Wijewardene, the Chairman of the Company, founded the Company.

The Company commenced its operations by publishing three weekly tabloids. The project was intended to provide high quality reading material at affordable prices to the readers of Sri Lanka, a nation with the highest literacy rate of 86% amongst it's South Asian neighbours. The Company commissioned Sri Lanka's first Web fed offset printing plant for high quality colour printing.

In 1984 a further addition to the then existing periodicals, "The Lanka Woman", an English weekly for Women was made. In 1986 the Company expanded its business further by acquiring publishing rights of seven Sinhala and English Newspaper Titles of the Government Owned Business undertaking of Times of Ceylon Ltd., which was under liquidation. With this acquisition, the Company moved into printing national newspapers namely "Sri Lankadeepa" and "The Sunday Times". In 1991 the first Sinhala Daily of the Company "Lankadeepa" came to the news-stands and became an instant success. In 1999, the Midweek Mirror a weekly tabloid paper published in the English language was turned into first English daily named as "Daily Mirror".

The "Lankadeepa" is the leading national Sinhala daily today. The newspaper is published in seven editions daily catering to the various geographical areas of the country.

The Company was the first to introduce opinion polls sponsorship in Sri Lanka. The first opinion polls were for the General Election and for the Presidential Election in 1994, which predicted the outcome accurately.

Today the Company has a very strong market share in newspaper sales and making efforts to increase its share in advertising space sale.
