The Hub Theatre

The Hub Theatre is located on Newtown Bridge around the corner from Australia Street. It is a survivor of the many entertainment venues such as theatres and dance halls for which Newtown was well known in the earlier part of the twentieth century.

The original Hub Theatre was further along King Street towards the city, where Burland Hall now stands: it was converted from a swimming baths and skating rink into a picture theatre. Clays Bridge Theatre was the former name of the theatre now called The Hub. It was owned by Harry Clay, and was claimed to be the only vaudeville theatre in Newtown. Advertisements offered patrons "a change of artists weekly" and performances every evening starting at 8.

Following World War II many Europeans of Greek, Yugoslav and other non-English-speaking backgrounds settled in the Newtown area, and The Hub was one of several cinemas in this period showing non-English language films. Subsequently, it became a venue for pornographic films and striptease shows.
