Part 29 � True Blues get their Color Names

New Colors

�

By 1998, several of Crayola�s earlier specialty sets were off the market and the Hero contests were all over meaning that it was time to put actual color names on all of their new colors.

�

They came out with the colors in several different boxes.� There was a Wizard�s Giant box featuring 120 colors that had a copyright of 1997 on the box but didn�t appear until early 1998.� They also came out with �The Ultimate�, an assortment that feature 200 colors; their biggest ever.� Unbeknownst to anyone (even Crayola), this collection surpassed the previous largest collection that came out 80 years earlier from Franklin Crayon Mfg.; a 175 crayon assortment that is known only through advertising now as no examples are known or have surfaced to date.

Here�s how the colors were assigned:

True Blue No. 1 � Outer Space

True Blue No. 2 � Mountain Meadow

True Blue No. 3 � Fuzzy Wuzzy Brown

True Blue No. 4 � Brink Pink

True Blue No. 5 � Shadow

True Blue No. 6 � Banana Mania

True Blue No. 7 � Torch Red

True Blue No. 8 � Purple Heart

Of course, as it turns out, these weren�t exactly the same colors used in the Canadian �Who�s your hero� contest.� For whatever reason, they used Pink Flamingo as their No. 2 color instead of Mountain Meadow.�

Given that the contest colors were merely temporary color names, like the ones earlier in the timeline, these names simply replace the names on the temporary color names from the contest; they didn�t constitute new color names.

�

Though all of these colors are more difficult to get because they only were put into the largest of assortments and even the No. 64 and No. 96 weren�t large enough to include them, one color in particular stands out as among one of the rarest color names.� Torch Red could only be found for a short period of time and only in two containers:� The Giant Chest of Crayons with a 1997 copyright date and The Ultimate with a 1998 copyright date (both pictured below).� By mid 1998 they changed the color to Scarlet.� The wrapper was a lighter orange color too.

Other New Colors

�

The True Blue contest colors weren�t the only new colors Crayola introduced in 1998 though.� They also added another 12 new color names and true colors to their ever growing line up:� Almond, Antique Brass, Beaver, Blue Bell, Canary, Cotton Candy, Cranberry, Desert Sand, Eggplant, Fern, Manatee, Pig Pink

Like the True Blue colors, these colors were only featured in the same large assortments.

The only exception was that you could find them in the Wizard�s Giant Box of Crayons.� This didn�t have Torch Red though.� That had already been swapped out for Scarlet.

Scarlet Pimpernel

�

A benefit was held on January 27, 1998 at the Roseland Ballroom on

West 52nd St.

in New York City.� The benefit was called the Kids Fan Festival and it was designed to allow Broadway stars and children to meet each other and interact.� One of the plays that night was the Scarlet Pimpernel and as a feature attraction for the play, they had Crayola create four special colors associated with the play.� Like the VHS movies from 1997, these colors were simply put into a generic four color box (dated 1992) and handed out at the booth during the festival.

The special color names were: �Magaruite cerulean, Pimpernel peach, Chevaulin chartreuse, scarlet red

�

In making these new color names, Crayola didn�t adhere to their new standard of all lower case names.� But they also weren�t consistent in their case usage either.� The second color names on all the colors were not capitalized.� Also, scarlet red wasn�t capitalized at all.

�

Magaruite cerulean came from Cerulean.� Pimpernel peach came from Peach.� Chevaulin chartreuse came from Laser Lemon and scarlet red came from Red and not Torch Red even though Torch Red was renamed Scarlet during the same year.� It�s quite a coincidence that Scarlet came up as a color name twice during 1998 but both having different true colors.

Construction Paper

One of the specialty crayon lines introduced in 1998 was the Crayola Construction Crayons.� These didn�t have a color impact because they chose not to put color names on any of the wrappers or box.� The specialty line remained one of the longest running specialty lines they ever put out.

A Few Goodbyes Too

�

The reality was that while Crayola continued to experiment with exciting new specialty sets and concepts, many of these weren�t successful enough to keep on the market for a long time and so they pulled them and moved on to the next concept.� In 1998 the following earlier sets disappeared:

The Discovery sets were off the market; they were a very short run having only debuted in 1997 and run through part of 1998.

�

Oh, and not impacting the color history directly, but the wrappers for the four new colors from the Special Brightest box from 1997 got rid of their �New� wrappers and got normal wrappers (caribbean green, pink flamingo, sunset orange, vivid violet)

For the color history, here were the changes that these assortments and specialty sets made:

After-Burner Orange was discontinued as a color name

Aquamarine was discontinued as part of the Discovery set but it�s color name and true color was still part of the core color Aquamarine

Asteroid Brown (brown) was discontinued as a color name

Black Hole (black) was discontinued as a color name

Blast-off was discontinued as a color name

Blue Bell was a new color name and true color

Canary was a new color name and true color

Caribbean Sea was discontinued as a color name

Chevaulin chartreuse was a new color name but its true color came from Laser Lemon

Comet Tail was discontinued as a color name

Coral purple was discontinued as a color name

Cotton Candy was a new color name and true color

Cranberry was a new color name and true color

Cultured Pearl was discontinued as part of the Discovery set but it�s color name and true color was still part of the Pearl Brite specialty set

Deep Sea (blue) was discontinued as a color name

Desert Sand was a new color name and true color

Dolphin Fin was discontinued as a color name

Eggplant was a new color name and true color

Fern was a new color name and true color

Fuzzy Wuzzy Brown was a new color name for one of the True Blue Hero contest colors

Galactic Gold was discontinued as a color name

Jellyfish Purple (violet) was discontinued as a color name

These changes increased our overall named color count from 470 to 487 and the true color count went up from 288 to 300.� Active named colors decreased from 262 to 234 and active true colors increased from 154 to 166.�
