Africa: Corsa (hatchback, sedan Classic), Astra (hatch�back, sedan Classic),
Corsa Utility pick-up.
Production volume in South Africa in 2003 - 17,125 passenger
vehicles and 5,661 pick-ups. General Motors began the assembly of Chevrolet
cars in South Africa in 1926. In the 1930s the as�sembly of the following makes also took place:
Cadillac, La Salle, Oldsmobile, Buick, GMC, Bedford, Vauxhall and Opel (in 1973-83 under the Che�vrolet
trademark). In the 1960s full scale production was launched. In the years 1968-74 the Ranger cars were
produced, and since 1983 all of the models have been offered as Opels. In 1986 GM with�drew its
capital. In January 1987 the firm was taken over by an independent South African company and
renamed to Delta. GM re-acquired 49% of the company in 1997, and increased that share to 100% in March 2004, changing the
firm�s name to GM South Africa. The old Corsa was produced
here from July 1996 till 2004. The production of the new model, made on the basis of the Opel Corsa 2000 and available in a
5-door hatchback or a sedan Classic body version, began in October 2002. The cars feature the
following engines: 1.4-liter 90 hp; 1.6-liter 102 hp; 1.8-liter 107 hp or 1.7-liter 75 hp diesel. In 2000 the Kadett and
Astra
were replaced by the new Astra II, available with 1.6-liter 98 hp, 1.8-liter 125 hp or 2.2-liter 147 hp (only in Classic
sedan) power plants. Produced since 1997, the Corsa Utility model was replaced by the II
generation Corsa Utility pick-up (1.4-liter 90 hp; 1.8-liter 107 hp or TD 1.7-liter 75 hp) in August 2004. The assembly of
the
Hummer H3 will be launched in South Africa at the end of 2006.
