The total number of the actual population of the region, according to the All-Ukrainian Population Census� 2001 data, accounted for 1,299.7 thousand people.

The urban population, according to the data of the All-Ukrainian census of the population, accounted for 842.9 thousand people, or 64.9%, and that of the rural population � 456.8 thousand people, or 35.1%.

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census� 2001 data, the number of men accounted for 593.8 thousand people, or 45.7%, that of women � 705.9 thousand people, or 54.3%.

Comparatively with the census of the population �1989, the number of towns stayed at the same level and All-Ukrainian Population Censusb data it amounted to 15.

Among permanent population the citizens of Ukraine totalled 1,282.1 thousand people, citizens of other countries � 4.3 thousand people, including citizens of CIS � 4.2 thousand people. There were about 2.5 thousand persons without citizenship in the region and those who haven�t specify their citizenship � 7.8 thousand people.

The age structure of the population, stated by the All-Ukrainian Population Census� 2001, is characterized by the decrease in the part of children in total population simultaneously with the increase in the part of the persons at the older than able-to-work age, that considerably complicates present demographic situation and leads to the growing ageing of the population.

The peculiarity of the national structure of the population of the region is its multinational composition. According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census� 2001 data, the representatives of more than 95 nationalities and ethnic groups lived on the territory of the region. The part of Ukrainians in the national structure of the population of the region was the largest, their number totaled 1,152.0 thousand people, or 88.8% of the total population.

The language structure of the region is characterized by the following data: the part of those whose mother tongue is Ukrainian totals 84% of the population of the region, this is by 5.9 percentage points more than in 1989. The part of those whose mother tongue is Russian totals 15.6% of the population, comparatively with the data of the previous census this index has decreased by 5.8 percentage points.

The All-Ukrainian Population Census� 2001 results testified to the tendency to the rise of the educational standard of the population and the increase in the number of people with higher and complete secondary education. The number of people with higher and complete secondary education amounted to 768.6 thousand people, what exceeded by 19.3% the corresponding characteristic of the population census �1989.

According to the All-Ukrainian Population Census� 2001 data, the number of married men and women accounts for 653.3 thousand people.
