Abstract
Switzerland is a small, multicultural state in the center of Europe. At the end of 1989 the population was 6.7 million living in 2.5 million households. More than one seventh of them were foreigners. Due to the topographical situation of the country, this population is unevenly distributed. Half of the population live in suburban or metropolitan areas. This contrasts considerably with the thinly populated regions and peripheries. The country is culturally segmented in four different language groups: German, 74%, French 20%, Italian 5%, Romansch 1%. These figures correspond to the year 1980.
