The Bengal Pro T20 League, also known as Bengal T20, is a professional T20 cricket league based in West Bengal, India[1]. The league features teams from various cities and regions within the state, with players from both domestic and international backgrounds competing[2]. Founded to promote cricket in the region and showcase emerging talent, the league aims to provide a platform for local cricketers to gain exposure and experience in a competitive environment[3]. The Bengal Pro T20 League operates under the guidance of the Bengal Cricket Association and serves as a significant addition to the Indian domestic cricket landscape[4].
History
[edit]The inaugural season was held at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata in 2024, with eight franchises.
The league will feature top players of the state (across IPL and international). Inspired by the success of India Premier League (IPL), the league will have world class production quality and broadcast. The major aim of this league is to unearth new talents from the state.
The first season of the league was initially planned to be held from 11 June to 28 June 2024.
The inaugural edition of the league reached a cumulative audience of 150 Million plus through TV, digital-social media and traditional media.
Background
[edit]In 2024, the Bengal Pro T20 League was launched. The West Bengal franchise playing Indian Premier League (IPL), the league was aimed to make up for the absence of high-profile matches in Kolkata in the year and to expose talented players from districts. It was conceived by former BCCI president and then CAB president Sourav Ganguly.[5]
Administration
[edit]The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) founded the league in 2024. The league is affiliated to the Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI).
Format
[edit]The Bengal Pro T20 League follows a round-robin format in its group stage, with teams competing against each other to secure a spot in the knockout phase. The league typically consists of a set number of teams, with each team playing multiple matches against others within their group.[6]
At the conclusion of the group stage, the top teams based on points and net run rate advance to the playoffs. The playoffs are structured as follows:
- Semi-finals: The top four teams compete in two semi-final matches, with the winners progressing to the final.[7]
- Final: The two semi-final winners face off in the final match to determine the champion of the season.[8]
The league also includes a points system, with teams earning points for wins and deductions for losses, leading to the final standings.[9]
Teams
[edit]There are eight franchises competing in the league. The franchises are named after a city it is representing in the state. Each team can have a maximum of 17 players that includes two outstation players.
