The European 20,000 Challenge Improve/create any article on anywhere in Europe whenever you feel like it and list it!...

Know somebody who might be interested in contributing? Alert them, and ask them to invite others!
The idea is based on Wikipedia:The 20,000 Challenge for the British Isles and The 10,000 Challenge (Africa), and now it has its own for European countries.
The idea is not to document every minor edit or improvement, but to create a momentum by displaying the diversity of content being improved or created for each country and make it more visible regionally, and in turn attempt to inspire and motivate people to work on countries they might not normally work on or reinforce existing national WikiProject efforts to improve content. With that in place, eventually there might be some contests in the format of Wales's Awaken the Dragon, The Africa Destubathon or regional/national contests held for European countries with prizes, we'll see.
Congratulations, we reached 10,000 articles on April 20, 2025! The challenge has now been scaled to 20,000.
Improve the quality of existing articles related to Europe, and to encourage more editors to improve general article quality and sourcing. Try to ensure that no article created or existing is unsourced, and try to ensure that every article has no unsourced statements and that citations are neatly drawn up and consistently formatted. The most important goal of the challenge is to try to see an overall improvement in quality for European countries, and more consistency in articles in any category.
To encourage the creation of missing content and build a highly comprehensive coverage of every European country on English Wikipedia. In doing so, to develop a detailed missing article directory for European countries by area and topic to promote long term growth and view overall scope.
To make existing settlement articles for Europe consistently of minimum quality, with some geographical and population information and create new articles in the same style. Eventually aim to have a satisfactory article for every settlement in Europe.
Create a general district template for every district in Europe like Template:Amasya District (for Turkey) as a long term development tool and encourage more articles on buildings in localities.
To generate a strong momentum for Europe and stage contests/editathons which fuel growth and attract people to develop those countries which might not otherwise get much attention. In the long term, try to build bridges with institutions within Europe and get them to see the potential of Wikipedia for national development. Get libraries, universities and cultural institutions involved in hosting editathons and forming partnerships with Wikipedia in contests, which promote growth on both English and other European language Wikipedias.
If the regional one doesn't appeal much to you but you think you'd prefer contributing to a country/sub regional specific one with a 1000 or more articles like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic), sign up under a country below and I'll create a new 1000 sub challenge if there is the support. Start a new section and red link if there is a country you might contribute to not listed. The sub challenges would function as feeder challenges for this but retain a better sense of national identity in contributing.
If there is the support we could make this a 5000 Challenge and be more ambitious but need numbers to make it work. Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland.
Millbart (talk) 14:55, 13 November 2016 (UTC) Expanding articles with a focus on villages and municipalities, mainly translations from dewiki on an on and off basis in the next couple of months.[reply]
BabbaQ (talk) 09:38, 9 May 2021 (UTC) There are definitely interest enough to justify this project. If created I would working hard to expand articles.[reply]
If we can get together some editors who think they might be interested in working on something like this long term sign up here. If I can see some sort of initial indication that there is the support for this I'll start a full blown challenge later in the month. Here's the list of participants taking it upon themselves to commit to this daunting affair:
Artemis Andromeda (talk). Hi, my name's Anne, nice to meet you all. I wanna help expand Wikipedia and help in reaching the goal of this challenge. I'm mostly writing articles related to Warsaw, Poland (neighbourhoods, places, buildings, monuments, etc), and to the lesser extent also Szczecin, and Tricity. But I'm really open on writing anything Europe-related. I'm also sometimes writing about European politicians, artists, writers and actors. If you ever wanna talk, need help in a project, or wanna help me in writing more articles, feel free to reach out <3
Please list below all articles you have begun or improved in some significant fashion from October 2016 to present. Pages belonging to subchallenges under the umbrella of Europe should also be added to the lists thereof (Turkey, Nordic nations, etc.). The British Isles retain their own challenge, click on me to view it. You are free to list any article you wish related to any country or topic in Europe. When adding new articles to the list, please place them at the bottom of the list, keep your notes concise and accurate (destubbed, researched, rewritten, etc.), and do not add an article to the list twice. Make sure to credit yourself and any other significant editors to the page when adding it to the list. Ex: Stumpstumpf, cleaned up and researched by userdude1337.
Please try to ensure that all entries are sourced with formatted citations and that there are no unsourced claims. Try to avoid creating short stubs for this, though lengthy stubs are welcome. Embolden entries which are GA/FA noms or listings to mark work of sealed quality.
When you add a page to this list, make sure to add Template:WPEUR20k to the top of that page's talk page!
