The Illinois Gateway Amendment was on the ballot in Illinois on November 5, 1946, as a legislatively referred constitutional amendment. It was defeated. It proposed that the legislature should be able to submit amendments to up to three constitutional articles per session.[1]

Note: Although this measure gathered more "yes" votes, it did not pass because at the time of the vote Illinois required that amendments receive a vote of more than 50 percent of those voting in the election. There were 3,619,322 voters in this election, requiring at least 1,809,662 “yes” votes for the measure to pass.
