The Texas Rangers have released first baseman Ike Davis, according to the beat guys on Twitter.
Davis, 29, had been signed to a minor league deal by the Rangers this past offfseason, and had been playing 1B and DH at AAA Round Rock. He had a .268/.350/.437 slash line in 39 games.
Davis was signed by the Rangers to provide them with first base depth, as well as offering a possible reclamation project, as he was rather good for the Mets in 2010-11 before declining over the past several years.
With the Rangers currently looking at Joey Gallo at first base, as well as having Ryan Rua and Jurickson Profar playing well in the majors as first base options behind Mitch Moreland, Davis did not appear to have a realistic chance to make the majors here, and Jeff Wilson says that the release was granted to give Davis the chance to pursue other opportunities.
UPDATE -- Per Adam Rubin, Davis is signing a major league deal with the New York Yankees.
