LBU-30 [leaflet bomb unit]
A Leaflet Bomb is a device used for dropping large quantities of propaganda leaflets from high flying aircraft, to insure their reaching their targets with a minimum of drift caused by air currents. The LBU-30 [leaflet bomb unit] consists of the SUU-30 cluster munition dispenser modified to deliver leaflets. The older CBU-52, -58 and -71 cluster munitions are being phased-out of operational use, freeing up thousands of SUU-30 dispensers that can be modified to deliver leaflets. This AF Information Warfare Battlelab's Leaflet Bomb initiative will replace obsolete leaflet canisters and will improve the delivery of pamphlets supporting US operations. The SUU-30 can carry more leaflets than can be packed into the M129. Because the weapon has already undergone stores separation testing, what the Air Force calls Seek Eagle, it can be fielded quickly. The LBU-30 completed flight testing at Eglin AFB, FL in 2000, when the weapon was successfully dropped from an F-16 flying at 20,000 ft.
