Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink celebrates Cardiff's second goal

Cardiff City booked their place in the FA Cup quarter-final for the first time since they won the trophy back in 1927 after beating Wolves at Ninian Park.

Peter Whittingham opened the scoring after just 90 seconds from a flick-on by Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink.

And it was Hasselbaink's turn to get on the scoresheet nine minutes later curling a superb effort into the top left-hand corner.

Wolves never got to grips with the game and rarely threatened their hosts.

It was the perfect opening for the Bluebirds who came out on the attack against a Wolves side who looked nervy from the start.

And it took just 90 seconds to get themselves ahead.

Whittingham was totally free from Hasselbaink's touch and had time and space to stroke the ball past Wayne Hennessey.

Wolves did not really recover from the early setback and fell further behind on 11 minutes after being hit on the break.

Hasselbaink freed Paul Parry down the left, who put in a deep cross which fell to Whittingham.

He cut-back for the oncoming Hasselbaink who cleverly side-stepped and sweetly lofted the ball into the top left-hand corner to put Cardiff 2-0 up.

The visitors tried to get themselves back into the game with patient play, but did not create any openings while looking prone to being hit on the break.

And six minutes before the break, Wolves boss Mick McCarthy threw on striker Freddy Eastwood for midfielder George Olofinjana.

The move almost proved fruitful with Eastwood forcing Peter Enckelman into his first save of the game with his and the visitor's first chance.

But down the other end, Hennessey had to be alert and took two attempts to keep out Hasselbaink.

Kevin Kyle could have pulled a goal back straight after the re-start after taking advantage of a Glen Loovens mistake.

The on-loan Coventry striker raced down the left and despite having options in the box he went for glory only for Loovens to make amends by racing back to clear off the line.

Hennessey was kept busy in the Wolves goal as the dominant Bluebirds pushed for a third, denying Parry twice and another effort from Whittingham.

But the game rapidly petered out as Cardiff stayed in control and Wolves offered little.

"Overall, it was well deserved.

"I thought we started bright, made them make mistakes in the first couple of minutes.

"We continued that right through the game and we had to because it was a tough tie for us."

• Wolves boss Mick McCarthy:
"That's three games out of four we've been a goal down within a minute or two and we didn't recover and it was an awful performance by us.

"Apparently some of the fans on the terraces were singing to the lads at the warm-down that they were a disgrace and the performance was poor and I have to say I'm not going to disagree with that.

"We haven't had a worse performance than that all season. I was embarrased by that today and I've said that to the players.

"Any stick the fans are giving out to us is thoroughly deserved today."
