The Musketeer sees Chambers in the role of swashbuckling French hero D'Artagnan, one of Dumas's three horsebacked heros on a mission to save the French royal family during the French Revolution.

Two Can Play At That Game stars Vivica A Fox as a vindictive girlfriend. The movie attracted a primarily black audience, said a spokesman for distributors Sony.

Rock Star is based on a true story about an ordinary salesman who finds himself recruited to front heavy metal band Judas Priest.

The film did not do as well as anticipated at the weekend but makers Warners said it did best among college students.

The rest of the top five was filled by Jeepers Creepers, starring Gina Philipps and Justin Long, at number four with takings of $6.2m (£4.2m).

Despite its fall in position, the movie about a brother's and sister's encounter with a creature on a country road, has made an impressive $24.3m (£16.5m) in two weeks.

At number five was psychological thriller The Others, starring Nicole Kidman, which made $6.1m (£4.1m).

The week's other two new releases failed to make the top 10. The first, Soul Survivors came in at number 14, after making $1.1m (£750,845) in 601 cinemas.

The second was violent Colombian movie Our Lady of the Assassins. The Spanish-language feature failed to chart but made $55,044 (£37,572) after opening in only four cinemas in New York and LA.

Elsewhere, Jackie Chan's sequel Rush Hour 2 fell to number six from last week's four.

But the buddy action comedy, also starring Chris Tucker, continues to do well and its overall takings went over $200m (£136m) at the weekend.
