The Oakland A's had a rough night in Anaheim on Wednesday, with their first three pitchers of the night getting torched for a total of 14 runs in a lopsided loss. But after none of Drew Pomeranz, R.J. Alvarez and Fernando Abad managed to stymie the Angels' offense, A's manager Bob Melvin turned to first baseman Ike Davis to pitch the eighth.

Davis, who pitched in college at Arizona State, induced three straight ground balls to retire the Angels in order in the 8th. His fastball registered as high as 88 miles per hour, and he even threw what looked like a slider to retire Collin Cowgill.

The A's will most likely look to avoid using position players to pitch moving forward, but since it's the A's it's impossible to know for sure. Maybe turning Ike Davis into a lefty relief option is all part of Billy Beane's master plan.
