A printer is a device that creates
a physical copy of a digital
document or image.

It's like a magic machine that

NOW LET US UNDERSTAND
THE WORKING MECHANISM
OF EACH TYPE OF PRINTER
CHARACTER PRINTERS
DOT MATRIX PRINTER
Dot matrix printers are a type of impact printer that uses a printhead
with a series of pins to create dots on the paper. These dots are
arranged in a matrix to form letters, numbers, and other characters.
How a Dot Matrix Printer Works
1. Printhead Movement: The printhead moves across the paper, usually
from left to right.
2. Pin Activation: As the printhead moves, specific pins are activated to
strike the paper.
3. Ink Ribbon: An ink ribbon is positioned between the printhead and
the paper. When a pin strikes the paper, it also presses the ink ribbon
against the paper, transferring ink onto the paper.
4. Dot Formation: The pattern of activated pins determines the shape
of the dot or character being printed.
DAISY WHEEL PRINTER
A daisy wheel printer uses a circular disk with characters around its edge.

The wheel rotates to position the desired character, which is then struck
by a hammer against an inked ribbon to print on paper.

1. High-quality output: Daisy wheel printers are known for

producing sharp, clear text and graphics.
2. Durability: They are built to last and can withstand heavy use.
However, daisy wheel printers are also known for being relatively
slow and expensive to maintain.
GOLF BALL PRINTER
A golf ball printer is a type of impact printer that uses a print head with a
spherical print element, resembling a golf ball, to create characters.

The print head moves across the paper, positioning the print
element over the desired location.
The print element rotates until the correct character is aligned.
A hammer strikes the print element, forcing it against the ribbon
and paper.
The raised dots on the print element transfer ink onto the paper,
forming the character.
CYLINDER PRINTER
A cylinder impact printer is a type of impact printer that uses a cylindrical print
head with raised characters to create images. The print head rotates to position
the desired character over the paper, and then a hammer strikes the print head
against the paper and ribbon, transferring ink to the paper.

The print head rotates to position the desired

character over the paper.
A hammer strikes the print head against the
paper and ribbon.
The raised characters on the print head transfer
ink to the paper, creating the image.
LINE PRINTERS
CHAIN PRINTER
The chain moves horizontally across the paper,
with each character on the chain passing over
the print head.
As a character passes over the print head, a
hammer strikes the print head against the ribbon
and paper.
The inked character is pressed onto the paper,
creating the desired impression.
The chain continues to move until the entire line
of text has been printed.
BAND PRINTER
A band printer is a type of line printer that uses a rotating drum with characters
printed on it to print lines of text. The drum rotates as the paper moves past it,
and the characters are pressed against the paper through an inked ribbon. Band
printers are known for their high speed and reliability, but they are also relatively
noisy and expensive to maintain.
How it works:
1.The band printer starts by positioning the paper at the beginning of the line.
2.The drum begins to rotate, bringing the characters into contact with the paper.
3.As the characters pass over the paper, a hammer strikes the character against
the paper and ribbon, transferring ink to the paper.
4.The drum continues to rotate until the entire line of text has been printed.
5.The paper moves to the next line, and the process repeats.

Band printers are often used in high-volume printing applications, such as printing
large batches of documents or reports. They are also used in some specialized
applications, such as printing continuous forms or printing on multipart forms.
DRUM PRINTER
Character Selection: The printer determines the characters to be printed on the
current line.
Drum Rotation: The drum, with characters arranged around its circumference,
begins to rotate.

Hammer Activation: At the appropriate time, a hammer strikes the paper against the
inked ribbon, transferring the character to the paper.

Paper Movement: The paper moves forward, bringing the next portion of the line
into position.
Drum Rotation Continues: The drum continues to rotate, printing the next character
in the sequence.

Drum printers are known for their high speed and reliability, but they are
also relatively noisy and expensive to maintain. They were widely used in
the past for large-scale printing jobs
NON IMPACT PRINTER
THERMAL PRINTER
Thermal Printer
How it works: Thermal printers use heat to
melt wax-based ink onto specially coated
paper. The heat from the printer's thermal
head melts the ink, causing it to adhere to
the paper. This process is often used for
receipts and labels.
LASER PRINTER
1. The light pen: A laser beam is like a light pen that draws a special pattern
on a drum.
2. The special powder: Toner is like a special powder that sticks to the places
where the light pen touched.
3. The special paper: Your paper is like a special paper that the powder sticks
to.
4. The special heat: A special heater makes the powder stick to the paper
forever.
High Print Quality: Laser printers are known for producing sharp, crisp text and
graphics. This is due to the precision of the laser beam and the high-quality
toner used.
Fast Print Speeds: Laser printers are generally faster than inkjet printers,
especially for large print jobs. This makes them ideal for offices and businesses
with high printing demands.
Durability: Laser printers are built to last. They typically have longer lifespans
than inkjet printers, making them a cost-effective investment in the long run.
INKJET PRINTERS
Inkjet printers are a type of non-impact printer that use small droplets of ink to create images on
paper. They are commonly used for home and office printing, as well as for professional
applications such as photography and graphic design.
Here are three characteristics of inkjet printers:
1. Color Printing: Inkjet printers can print in color, which is a major advantage over laser printers,
which are typically black and white only. This makes inkjet printers ideal for printing photos
and other colorful graphics.
2. High Resolution: Inkjet printers can produce high-resolution prints, which are important for
applications such as photography and graphic design. This is because inkjet printers can print
millions of tiny dots of ink per square inch, which creates a smooth and detailed image.
3. Lower Cost per Page: Inkjet printers typically have a lower cost per page than laser printers,
especially for low-volume printing. This is because inkjet printers use less ink per page than
laser printers.

WORKING:
Inkjet printers spray tiny ink droplets onto paper. The ink is stored in cartridges. The printer
analyzes the document and sprays the right colors to create the image.
